New York Giants fire coach Brian Daboll

It finally happened. Brian Daboll’s firing was the talk of the town in the last few weeks in the NFL and the rumours got louder after the Tennessee Titans let go of their head coach, Brian Callahan, opening the firing season in the league. 

NFL franchises usually fire coaches after the end of the regular season but, recently, a lot of teams moved from coaches before that period. Once you decide for a change, there is no point in waiting, after all. Let’s see what brought the New York Giants to show Daboll the door.

A bright start and a very poor finish

The Daboll experience in NY can be summarized with the words we used for the title of this paragraph. In 2022, when Daboll began his stint as the Giants’ head coach, he got the team to the playoffs and was awarded with the Coach of the Year honor. Then, disaster struck. He finishes his tenure with a record of 20 wins, 40 losses and a tie. He is the worst Giants’ coach ever in a minimum of 50 games and he started this season with just 2 wins, exactly like he did last year and the year before. The front office deemed it enough to move on from him.

While awaiting a replacement, the Giants have placed assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka on an interim basis. He will try to turn the team around, which currently sits dead last in the difficult NFC East. The Giants have a good roster and a lot of question marks

 Looking ahead, in New York there are people who already started to put out intriguing names for the Giants’ future. After all, the roster is not bad at all. The Giants can count on quarterback Jaxson Dart, running back Cam Skattebo and the superstar wide receiver, Malik Nabers. The problem is: these three are all injured right now. Dart is fighting with a concussion, so he should be ready to jump back in sooner rather than later, but Skattebo and Nabers are out for the season after two ugly injuries and there is not a way to know in what condition they will be once they are cleared to play football again. We are talking about two physical players, covering two physical positions. You must be on top of your game to compete in those two roles, in this league.

The Giants defense is not the best around, but it is a good unit, capable of playing against brilliant offenses like the ones they face in their division: the Philadelphia Eagles, the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Commanders. There are reasons to believe that this Giants’ head coaching job will be a pretty sought after one next off-season, but there are also chances that someone refuses it because of all the question marks surrounding this environment. 

What if Nabers and Skattebo are not that decisive anymore after their injuries? What if the Eagles become one of the greatest dynasties this sport ever had and win 15 divisions in a row or such? What if the Cowboys draft the best talent around with all their draft capital? What if Jayden Daniels and the Commanders become one of the best teams in the league and leave NY in the dust? There are a lot of what ifs regarding the Giants and this could scare some candidates. This job would be a good challenge for the next head coach, with a very high ceiling but also with a pretty low floor. It’s intriguing, that is for sure.
