Chicago Bears’ Cole Kmet sounds alarm on new offensive problem
The Chicago Bears were known better known as the “cardiac Bears” under first-year head coach Ben Johnson.

Last season, the Bears did pretty much the opposite of what they did under former head coach Matt Eberflus. They found ways to win games. Often via epic comebacks.
Chicago earned six regular-season comebacks and one in the postseason against the Green Bay Packers. The Bears outscored Green Bay 25-6 in the fourth quarter to beat their NFC North rival 31-27 in the wild-card round.
However, the Bears are losing a key piece of their brain trust from last season. Offensive coordinator Declan Doyle is taking the same title with the Baltimore Ravens in 2026, though he will get to call the plays, something that was Johnson’s duty for Chicago.
Bears tight end Cole Kmet explained why losing Doyle is such a big deal for the offense. During an appearance on 670 The Score on Monday, Kmet said Doyle was the person making adjustments at halftime.
“Another thing Declan was great at is… I’m sure Ben as the head coach… there’s a lot of things you got to handle in halftime,” Kmet said. “Declan is the one addressing the offense at halftime.
“Kind of going over the openers that are going to be coming up in the second half and telling us what we need to do, what they’re seeing and how we can make adjustments.
Cole Kmet called Declan Doyle’s departure to the Ravens a “big loss” for the Bears and praised how much he helped the team’s offense.

The Chicago Bears lost two key offensive coaches

Kmet noted that running backs coach Eric Bieniemy, who left to become the offensive coordinator for the Kansas City Chiefs, was another big blow for the Bears in the offseason in addition to Doyle.
“It’s obviously a big loss for us, losing Declan, EB. Two great coaches, and guys that provide a lot of value to the offense side of the ball this year,” Kmet said. “And you know, even though Declan doesn’t call the plays for us, the amount of work that he did on the offensive side of the football was immense.
“And you can see that in day-to-day practice. And I’m sure it took a lot off of Ben throughout the week for his duties as a head coach.”
The Bears have yet to name Doyle’s replacement. But it might take a while for Johnson to find someone he trusts who can make key adjustments like the ones Doyle made in his first season as an offensive coordinator.
