The 2026 Chicago Cubs International signing class consists of a large quantity of players, with just one prospect being given more than $1.0 million at signing. That player, Yadier Muñoz, is the clear head of the class. However, buried in the sea of players they signed is Kotaro Tsenematsu, who gave up a dream job on wallstreet for a shot at a career in baseball.

Outfielder Kotaro Tsenematsu isn’t your typical International Signee. At 22 years old, he is much older than everyone else and already has his college degree. Prospects in this years class such as Munoz, Jaims Martinez, and Yanfri Serrano are your typical teenage signees.

For Tsenematsu, he is a graduate of Keio University in Japan, where he hit for a .281 batting average throughout his collegiate career. He declared for the Nippon Professional Baseball Draft, but was not selected. Chicago expressed interest in him, but reportedly was deciding between being one of the rare international players to come to the United States with no NPB experience versus starting a job at Goldman Sachs.
Tsenematsu ultimately chose to put his investment-firm career on hold, explaining that while he is physically able, he wants to pursue a career in baseball. Given his age, he will likely need to make an immediate impact, as he won’t have the luxury of several developmental years like many other international signees.
In the end, Tsenematsu’s decision reflects his willingness to bet on himself at a pivotal moment in his life. Turning away from stability to chase a long-shot dream of debuting in Major League Baseball is never easy, but his choice has been made and now his story line will be one to closely follow.
