Boston College EDGE Hutchins Stands Out at Senior Bowl

The 2026 Panini Senior Bowl was played yesterday, concluding the week that unofficially kicks off draft season.  This annual event in Mobile, AL (along with other All Star events like the Shrine Bowl) is crucial for players to raise their draft stock, especially if they’re not already projected as high picks.  It is where I usually begin my process as an armchair scout, which culminates at the NFL Draft.

For each non-special-teams play during the Senior Bowl game, I first determine the winner based on down and distance, and then award a “play made” point to the player I see made the biggest impact on that play.  It is certainly inexact, and some plays are much more clear cut than others.  In some cases such as a botched snap or dropped dump off, I award no points because nobody does anything positive.  Most of the time a point goes to somebody.  After the game ends I tally all the points I’ve given, and for 2026, here are the results:

EDGE Quintayvious Hutchins, Boston College (5 pts)

My only five-pointer of the day,  Hutchins was in everyone’s face all game.  He’s listed at only 6’3″, 240 lbs which is typically too small for a DE, but he showed the quickness and tenaciousness that befits a SAM LB.  He’s expected to be a day three pick and is probably a role player at the NFL level, but may be a diamond in the rough.

RB Kaelon Black, Indiana (4 pts)

The RB group had a good day in the cold and wind, but Black was used most extensively.  He impressed with his yards after contact, dragging several defenders with him on more than one play.  He has good vision and took advantage of a dominant Amercian Team OL in the first half.  This guy is on a heater after his team just won the NCAA Championship and he’s even shown some receiving skill during the week.

OT Max Iheanachor, Arizona St (4 pts)

Speaking of that dominant American Team OL, I don’t think Iheanachor played much in the second half and he could afford to sit at that point.  He blew everybody off the point of attack and sent a couple of his assignment to the ground.  Stacking this game on top of an impressive week has people speculating he will go late in the first round.  He is listed 6’6″, 330 lbs and he can drive or pull.

EDGE Nadame Tucker, Western Michigan (4 pts)

American reserve tackle Jude Bowry had a bad game and the primary beneficiary on the National team was Tucker.  He consistently bent/dipped around his assignment for pressures and TFL.  Tucker transferred to a MAC school where he put up 14.5 sacks his Senior season.  Returning to stiffer competition this week, it looks like that move paid off.  This is somebody I would look at in the mid rounds if I were the Ravens.

EDGE Zion Young, Missouri (4 pts)

Young was the best run defender on a day where RB enjoyed a lot of action.  Young is larger than Hutchins and Tucker (6’5″ 262) so this makes sense.  He also scored a fumble recovery.  With a more NFL-ready frame and SEC pedigree (formerly B1G) he looks like a day two pick; somebody you’d put on the strong side who wins with power.  Young won the American Team Player Of The Game award.

Those five players scored the most points using my system.  Here are the rest:

General Thoughts

This was not a good day to be a quarterback, as most of the points awarded them were for successful scrambles.  Garrett Nussmeier had the best looking throws early in the game while he was kept clean.  The National Team POTG went to Cole Payton for attempting a fourth quarter comeback.  That said, my opinion is the pass catchers as a whole were worse.  A number of WR and TE had bad drops, and a couple of them cost their QB with a tip drill.  The surprising receiver of the game was McCulley, who was a late add to the roster and had essentially just shown up to Mobile.  The DB group likewise suffered in grading because it was a run-oriented game.  Aside from Prysock who stood out, Rivers notably tackled well in the game.

The biggest reason why the American team came out on top was their OL in the first half, notably the right side trio of Slaughter, Wright and Iheanachor, enabling their backs to showcase.  One flaw in my system is that I only give a play point to one player, while the OL is more of a team achievement, but Iheanachor was the best of the group.  The tight ends, while lacking in receiving production, also threw some good blocks, particularly Cuevas and Kacmarek.

If you don’t see a name listed, it’s because that player either opted out of Saturday’s game (T.J. Parker for example, who had a huge week of practice) or didn’t “make a play.”

If you’ve read this far, thank you, and hopefully you have some names to check out as the process, uh, proceeds.
