Cubs sign former 1st round pick Tyler Beede to MiLB deal
The Chicago Cubs are continuing to add pitching depth. Following the headlining additions of starting pitcher Edward Cabrera and third basemen Alex Bregman, they claimed southpaw Ryan Rolison off waivers, thus increasing the number of players on the 40-man roster, while also adding right-hander Jeff Brigham to a minor league contract.
Another arm can be added to the list of recent acquisitions, as Ari Alexander has reported that right-hander Tyler Beede has signed a minor league deal with the Cubs. Beede is among the rare group of players to be drafted twice in the first round of the MLB Draft, first going 21st overall to the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011 and later being selected 14th overall by the San Francisco Giants in 2014.

Chicago Cubs sign Tyler Beede to a minor league deal
With the Giants, Beede was once a top 100 prospect who quickly climbed the minor league ranks, making his MLB debut in 2018. Recovering from Tommy John surgery wiped out his 2020 season, but he ultimately failed to find any footing in the big leagues, despite additional stints with the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Guardians.
In 2025, Beede initially was in the Minnesota Twins organization. He then went onto pitch in the Independent Atlantic League and Mexican League. At 32 years old his baseball journey has had it’s up and downs, but he’s hoping that fresh start in Chicago can help continue his career.
On the mound, Beede has a mid 9os fastball, with the ability to get in the upper 90s at times. Statcast has him throwing a fastball, sinker, split change, curveball, and slider. Throughout his career hes started and operated as a reliever, so it will be interesting to see what role the Cubs place him in.
