Chicago Cubs Insider Delivers Blunt Alex Bregman Message
Jed Hoyer and the Chicago Cubs took their time making moves this offseason. It appeared that the franchise was going to go the cheap route once again.
Despite the frustration that fans were starting to feel, the Cubs have changed everything this past week. Finally, the franchise has shown an interest in getting aggressive and trying to compete for a World Series run.
Everything started with the splash trade to acquire Miami Marlins starting pitcher Edward Cabrera. That move instantly improved one of the big holes for Chicago. Following that move, fans were curious about whether or not the Cubs would double down and pursue a big bat.
That is exactly what Hoyer did next.
On Saturday night, Chicago was able to agree to terms on a five-year, $175 million contract with star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman. The deal includes deferred money, which is something the Cubs have shown a reluctance to do despite it making spending big money easier.
It’s the first time in a long time that Chicago has operated like the big market team it is.
Now that the move has gotten done, Cubs’ insider Jesse Rogers of ESPN spoke out with a blunt and accurate message about the signing.
“The bottom line is they needed the bat to replace [Kyle] Tucker,” Rogers said.
Bregman has been one of the best third basemen in baseball for years. During the 2025 campaign with the Boston Red Sox, he played in 114 games and hit 18 home runs to go along with 62 RBI. He also produced a slash line of .273/.360/.462.
Hopefully, he’ll be able to stay healthy during the 2026 season. Replacing Kyle Tucker won’t be easy, but a healthy version of Bregman playing at his best can help towards that goal.
