Chicago Cubs, Alex Bregman Agree to Massive $175 Million Contract
Jed Hoyer and the Chicago Cubs have finally kicked their offseason into high gear. After making fans wait for weeks, the team has now acquired starting pitcher Edward Cabrera in a major splash trade with the Miami Marlins and backed that move up by signing star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman.
According to a report from ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan, the Cubs have agreed to a massive five-year, $175 million contract with Bregman.
“Third baseman Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs are in agreement on a five-year, $175 million contract, sources tell ESPN,” Passan wrote on X. “One year after their failed pursuit of Bregman in free agency, the Cubs land one of the biggest bats of the winter.”
Bregman was always viewed as the team’s top option offensively in free agency. Bo Bichette had some rumors coming out connected to Chicago recently, but Bregman was the clear top target for Hoyer and company.
Last offseason, as Passan noted, the Cubs tried to sign Bregman. Unfortunately, he chose to sign with the Boston Red Sox instead.
This time around, Chicago was able to get a deal done.
With Kyle Tucker expected to leave town in free agency barring a massive shock, Bregman will be asked to make a major impact at the plate. He’s more than capable of doing so, as he has shown throughout his career.
During the 2025 MLB season with the Red Sox, Bregman only played in 114 games. He hit 18 home runs to go along with 62 RBI and also slashed .273/.360/.462.
Back in his days with the Houston Astros, the 31-year-old star was much more productive at the plate. The Cubs will be hoping that he can get back to playing at that level in 2026 and beyond.
It will be interesting to see if Chicago is done making big moves. With Bregman now onboard, the future of Nico Hoerner could become a topic of conversation. Should Hoerner be kept, Matt Shaw would then transition into a super utility role, which would give the Cubs excellent infield depth.
