Two Chicago Blackhawks prospects earn national recognition in top-100 under-21 rankings

The Chicago Blackhawks have made it no secret that their rebuild centers around a deep, talented prospect pool. While the spotlight often shines on big names like Connor Bedard and Frank Nazar, the organization’s rising stars extend far beyond the NHL roster. This week, two more promising young players earned national recognition, further strengthening the belief that Chicago’s future is bright.

Defenseman Kevin Korchinski and forward Mason West both cracked Ryan Kennedy’s prestigious “Top 100 Players Age 21 or Under” list for The Hockey News, coming in at No. 57 and No. 51, respectively. For a franchise focused on long-term success, seeing multiple prospects rank among the best young talents in the hockey world is another promising sign that the Blackhawks’ rebuild is on track.

Defenseman Kevin Korchinski, placed at No. 57, has been one of Chicago’s most intriguing young blueliners ever since he was selected seventh overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. After splitting time between the NHL and AHL last season, the Blackhawks opted to give him more time to sharpen his game with the Rockford IceHogs, a move that already appears to be paying dividends.

Korchinski has recorded one goal and 14 points in 19 games for Rockford this season, showcasing his puck-moving ability and offensive instincts. His skating remains one of his biggest strengths, allowing him to transition the puck quickly and play with confidence on the rush.

Although he is still developing into a full-time NHL defenseman, his upside is undeniable. In 92 career NHL games, the 21-year-old has already posted six goals and 17 points. His growth curve suggests he could eventually become a top-four defenseman, possibly even running a power play unit once he gains more experience and consistency.

What keeps Korchinski on national radars is his blend of size, mobility, and hockey IQ, all traits that modern NHL teams value highly in young defensemen. The Blackhawks remain patient with his progress, knowing that defensemen often take longer to mature fully.

Being recognized among the top 60 prospects under 21 validates both his talent and his potential role in shaping Chicago’s blue line for years to come.

Mason West climbs into the spotlight with impressive production

While Korchinski is a more familiar name to many fans, forward Mason West might be the true “breakout” inclusion on Kennedy’s list. Ranked at No. 51, West’s rise is fueled by a combination of size, scoring ability, and steady development at multiple competitive levels.

West, who stands at an imposing 6-foot-6, had a dominant year at Edina High School, recording 27 goals and 49 points in 31 games. His ability to use his frame effectively, combined with strong puck protection skills and a heavy shot, makes him stand out among his age group.

He also impressed during his stint with the Fargo Force (USHL) last season, tallying one goal and nine points in 10 games, a strong showing against older, faster competition.

While still considered a long-term project, West’s ranking at No. 51 highlights how much potential scouts see in him. With continued development, he could evolve into a powerful top-six forward capable of impacting the game at both ends of the ice.

For the Blackhawks, having a prospect with West’s size and offensive touch is especially valuable as they look to build a more balanced forward group for the future.
