Chicago Bears coach offers confusing comments Austin Booker’s progress

Chicago Bears defensive end Austin Booker was the team’s sack leader in the preseason with four sacks.

Unfortunately, the second-year pass rusher started the season on injured reserve for a knee injury he suffered against the Buffalo Bills in August. This week, the Bears activated Booker from injured reserve to the 53-man roster.
The timing of Booker’s activation was curious. He’s been listed as a full participant in practice in recent weeks.
Dennis Allen called Austin Booker’s practice “outstanding”

On Thursday, Bears defensive coordinator commented on Booker’s progress at practice. Allen’s comments added some more confusion as he said Booker had an “outstanding” three weeks of practice.
“I really think, the last couple weeks, he has been outstanding in practice,” Allen said. “He’ll get an opportunity, I think, to get out there this week. We’ll see exactly what he can do, but I’m excited about watching him play, for sure.”
Why did the Bears wait so long to activate him if he’d been “outstanding” at practice? Chicago has needed depth at defensive end. With a hobbled secondary, the lack of a pass rush on defense has been a liability, and it was costly in Chicago’s 30-16 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday.
The Bears are tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for 25th in the league with 12 sacks.
It’ll be interesting to see how much playing time the Bears give Booker against the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 9. Given Allen’s comments that Booker has been “outstanding” at practice, he should be able to make a difference against Cincinnati.
