Keep Those Ravens Tight Ends Glued to the (Fantasy) Bench

Fantasy Blitz start sit week 5

Week 5 marks the first bye weeks of the 2024 NFL season! This is bad news for the managers in your league that never check their lineups, and great news for the managers playing against them.

The Detroit Lions, Los Angeles Chargers, Philadelphia Eagles and Tennessee Titans all rest this week. Plan accordingly.

(All fantasy-related statistics are derived from FantasyPros.com and are based on standard format unless otherwise specified).

Bengals-Ravens Fantasy Outlook

Start

Chase Brown (RB)

While he wasn’t expected to be a contender for Cincinnati’s RB1 spot in the presence of Zack Moss, Chase Brown is now a starting candidate in Week 5 after finishing against the Carolina Panthers with 20+ points in standard format and PPR.

Brown and Moss each finished with 15 carries against Carolina, although Brown ended up with 30 more yards for a total of 80 as well as two rushing touchdowns. Moss had just one touchdown, catching a 1-yard pass on the goal line.

The difference in yards per carry is what has been earning Brown increased attention. Brown has 19 fewer attempts than Moss across four games, but Moss’ 187 yards just barely exceed Brown’s 184. We’re talking 6.3 yards per carry versus 3.9, to put that in perspective.

Baltimore has an incredibly tough run defense that hasn’t let running backs do much in fantasy, but Brown’s recent usage at the goal line makes him a suitable replacement for any injured RB2s on your roster or even a flex option (only if you think Cincinnati will snap the ball inside the 10-yard line more than once).

Tee Higgins (WR)

It’s clear that Tee Higgins and Joe Burrow are finally starting to reconnect following Higgins’ absences from the first two games of the season. Higgins now has 16 targets across Weeks 3-4, racking up a team-high 10 targets against the Panthers that led to six receptions for 60 yards.

It’s not quite the yardage that Ja’Marr Chase reached (85), but it’s double his receptions.

Although we’re used to seeing Higgins as primarily a deep threat, it’s looking like he’ll be handling shorter routes in the offense moving forward with his longest catch against Carolina being only 12 yards.

Expect Higgins to surpass 10 PPR points for a second straight week if Ja’Marr Chase struggles early. He’s a solid WR3 or flex option.

Others to start: Lamar Jackson (QB), Derrick Henry (RB), Zack Moss (RB), Ja’Marr Chase (WR), Mike Gesicki (TE), Evan McPherson* (K)

*McPherson enters Week 5 with top-10 rankings across most fantasy sites, including rank seven on FantasyPros and rank four on ESPN. Baltimore currently ties with eight other teams for the third-highest average of field goals allowed to opposing teams per game (2.5).

Sit

Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely (TE)

Week 5 signifies Mark Andrews and Isaiah Likely’s third straight week on my sit list as Baltimore continues to shift towards a run-heavy offensive scheme that hasn’t left much for its tight ends to do except for block.

Nothing about Baltimore’s game versus Buffalo demonstrated that there is any reason to consider starting either Andrews or Likely. For a second straight week, Andrews saw only one target, running only about 10 yards on the route. Likely caught one of his two targets for 26 yards, showing a glimmer of his pass-catching abilities, but blocked the remainder of the game.

Likely still looks like the better candidate if there’s any hope left for either tight end becoming locked in on rosters this season, as he holds about 100 more yards than Andrews across four games. But as of now, neither should start considering that even five targets is a blessing.

Joe Burrow (QB)

Despite a strong Week 3 finish with three passing touchdowns that equated to 25 PPR points, Joe Burrow has yet to do much else in his fifth year of fantasy football with a current average of 16.7 points per game. He somehow carries a top-10 quarterback ranking on most fantasy websites, but in Week 5 he faces a defense that just held Josh Allen to only 7.3 fantasy points while keeping him touchdown-less through four quarters.

Aside from Dak Prescott reaching nearly 30 points against Baltimore with two passing touchdowns late in the game, the Ravens haven’t let another quarterback reach over 16. Don’t expect Burrow to reach 20 points with Baltimore continuing to improve its secondary.

Others to sit: Zay Flowers (WR), Rashod Bateman (WR), Bengals D/ST, Justin Tucker (K)

Start ‘Em, Sit ‘Em Frontrunners Around the League

Start

Tutu Atwell

Tutu Atwell has established himself as a solid WR3 or flex starter in the absences of Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua, despite having to share targets somewhat evenly with Colby Parkinson, Demarcus Robinson, Tyler Johnson, Kyren Williams and Jordan Whittington. Talk about a crowded room.

With Kupp and Nacua not expected to reunite on the field until at least late October, Atwell sits as a suitable replacement on fantasy rosters, currently leading the Rams’ receiving corps with 223 receiving yards despite tying with Johnson for the fourth-most targets (15). Atwell is undoubtedly Matthew Stafford’s current go-to on deep routes, as he currently leads the team with 20.3 yards per receptio.

He’s touchdown-less through four games, but PPR finishes of 13.3 in Week 3 and 12.2 in Week 4 make him worthy of starting against a Green Bay defense that has allowed an average of two passing touchdowns per game (tied for third-most in the league).

Xavier Worthy (WR)

Rashee Rice now joins Isiah Pacheco and Marquise Brown on Kansas City’s injury list, which leaves Xavier Worthy as the No. 2 target for Patrick Mahomes right behind Travis Kelce. With a fractured running corps consisting of Kareem Hunt and the so-far-sub-par likes of Samaje Perine and Carson Steele, there seems to be an incentive for Kansas City to be pass heavy in Week 5 against New Orleans which has averaged the seventh-most passing yards to opposing offenses per game with 233.8.

The rookie has boomed twice already this season, with PPR finishes of 20.8 in Week 1 and 16.3 this past week against the Chargers. He has averaged 3.75 targets per game which sits cushioned above fellow receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster (averaging one target per game) and Justin Watson (two targets per game). That translates to an average of 11.6 fantasy points per game, a number that assumes to be Worthy’s floor this week in a home matchup at Arrowhead.

Sit

Gabe Davis (WR)

After garnering a reputation as a reliable fantasy asset with the Buffalo Bills, 25-year-old Gabriel Davis has proven to be one of 2024’s biggest fantasy disappointments as he settles into his role as a Jacksonville Jaguar. The difference? Simple: Brian Thomas.

Last season with the Bills, Davis finished with the second-most yards on the team (746) behind Stefon Diggs but had 30 less receptions than Dalton Kincaid. Now with the Jags, Davis doesn’t find himself trailing a tight end in receptions but instead a running back, Travis Etienne Jr., while also behind his two fellow wide receivers.

There are too many mouths to feed on this Jacksonville offense even without Evan Engram playing, as backups like Brenton Strange are starting to get their fair share of attention, too.

Davis finds himself fitting in more as a WR3 while Christian Kirk is the clear WR2 under Thomas. Until he surpasses three targets in a game, leave him benched. He averages just 5.3 points per game in PPR and three points per game in standard format.

Darnell Mooney (WR)

Darnell Mooney has been a tough player to get a read on so far this season, exceeding his projections in Week 2 and Week 3 while failing to reach above 10 PPR points in Week 1 and Week 4.

Atlanta’s second-most-targeted receiver enters Week 5 against a Tampa Bay defense that has proven to be much sturdier against the pass game than the run game. The Bucs tie the New Orleans Saints for the least amount of passing touchdowns allowed per game (0.3) and sit in exactly the middle of the pack for most receiving yards allowed per game (203.8). Stopping the run has proven to be the central issue for Tampa Bay, which has allowed the third-most rushing touchdowns per game on average (1.8) and the eighth-most rushing yards per game (131.5).

Although the Falcons have far exceeded their rushing yards with passing yards in all four games thus far, Bijan Robinson (if fully healthy) and Tyler Allgeier are likely to be the top fantasy performers for Atlanta again in Week 5.

Mooney can be started in 12 or 14-man leagues based on his draft value alone but looks fine on the bench in shallower eight or 10-man settings.

Good luck!
