OTL: Ravens Suddenly AFC North Favorites
I won’t lie and say the vibes are high in Baltimore following the Orioles’ 1-0 loss at the hands of the Royals in Game 1 of their Wild Card Series. Thinking solely of the Ravens, though, vibes sure are high.
It’s crazy how quickly the narrative can change (let’s hang in there, O’s fans).
The Ravens are now the favorites to win the AFC North at 52.3%, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index projections:
Ravens (2-2): 52.3%
Steelers (3-1): 32.2%
Bengals (1-3): 13.9%
Browns (1-3): 1.6%— Jamison Hensley (@jamisonhensley) October 1, 2024
Now the division favorites once again, Ravens fans have every right to be excited. We all thought this team would be a contender, and they’re finally looking like one. More than any others, these two have been the key factors:

Baltimore finally rode the run for the entirety of the game, and reaped the benefits of their massive offseason acquisition. We’ve seen first-hand how scary Derrick Henry can be when he takes over a game, and that was a vintage performance from the King.
It was so impressive that it landed Henry on Tom Brady’s list of stars from last week:

Speaking of stars, one of the best receivers of the past decade requested a trade on Tuesday:

Needless to say, that has Ravens Flock excited:

We’ve seen Baltimore linked with Adams before, and the receiver has recently spoken highly of the signal-caller in Charm City:
We all know how Davante Adams feels about Lamar Jackson

The Ravens could use another strong presence on the outside, especially one who could box out defenders and give Jackson a real jump-ball threat. That said, Las Vegas is reportedly seeking a 2nd-Round Pick and change. Further, Baltimore may not be able to pay Adams’ cap hit.
If they want to badly enough, they can find a way, but this would require 2 things – Raiders would have to eat some of his $13.5M remaining salary & the Ravens would need to extend his deal (he’s due $36M & $37M in 2025 & 2026). Those #’s are untenable. He’ll be 32 then too. 1/ https://t.co/1aFALMZHXC

Ultimately, I find it unlikely.
I’m not sure what aesthetic he’s talking about here, but Ian Hartitz doesn’t seem to find it particularly likely, either. In fact, he feels the most realistic fit is Pittsburgh:
Davante Adams trades:
Most scary for NFL: Chiefs
Next-most scary for NFL: Bills
Fun: Cowboys
Realistic: Steelers
Nostalgic: Jets
Low-key fire: Commanders
Also low-key fire: Lions
Also also low-key fire: Chargers
Yay for aesthetics: Ravens
Shitty: Patriots
Really shitty: Browns— Ian Hartitz (@Ihartitz) October 1, 2024
Whatever happens, we all have to feel more confident about Baltimore’s defense after Sunday Night. The unit was suffocating, consistently delivering hits and pressuring Bills QB Josh Allen.
The secondary was particularly improved, and a big part of that was the play of rookie CB Nate Wiggins. We haven’t seen a ton of splash plays from Wiggins just yet, but his drops will start to turn into interceptions with time. For now, I’ll gladly take numbers like these:
Nate Wiggins in Week 4 vs the Bills:
80.9 PFF grade (5th among CBs)
33 coverage snaps
5 receiving yards allowed
2 dropped INTs
56.3 passer rating allowed pic.twitter.com/47y4fVr0xq— PFF BAL Ravens (@PFF_Ravens) October 1, 2024
Nate Wiggins put the Bills in a . The rookie gave up one catch for 5 yards on 35 coverage snaps, per @PFF.

Wiggins could be the piece that completes DC Zach Orr’s puzzle. Alongside him, though, is a man I’ve mentioned a few times recently: DT Travis Jones.
He hasn’t had a slow start to his career, per se, but Jones has turned it up multiple notches in his third season. Now, he’s the Ravens’ next game-wrecker on the inside.

I was concerned about Baltimore’s pass rush going into the season, and while Odafe Oweh and Kyle Van Noy have starred, a huge part of the unit’s success is the push from the interior. Jones has been a stud so far.
GM Eric DeCosta deserves his flowers for the 2022 draft class. Where do you think it rates among the Ravens’ best ever hauls?
Only two years in and the 22 draft class is setting up to be one of the best Ravens classes of all time. Where would you rank it ? pic.twitter.com/pQqsM7gClT
