Did Stonehenge’s stones really come from Wales and Scotland? Fact check

Medieval manuscript painting of a giant setting a lintel on two upright stones of Stonehenge while Merlin and another figure look on
Where Stonehenge’s stones came from is largely measured. Many bluestones match Preseli outcrops in west Wales and the Altar Stone matches the Orcadian Basin of north-east Scotland, both Established. How they traveled is Disputed: most archaeologists say people hauled them, while some earth scientists argue for glacier ice, now challenged by a 2026 sand-grain test. Waun Mawn as an earlier circle and West Woods as the sarsen source are Disputed. The Altar Stone’s route is Unverified. Giants and wizards are Fringe, and Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Merlin story is medieval folklore.
