Canadian politicians are the ones who threatened to cut off electricity exports to the United States in response to Trump’s aggressive tariff policies.
Following a breakdown in trade negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Donald Trump threatened a 50% tariff on Canadian automobiles, car parts, and steel. Angered by the tariffs, Ontario Premier Doug Ford fired back, stating that “everything is on the table” and threatening to cut off Ontario’s electricity and critical mineral exports to the U.S. if the trade war escalates. Ontario currently powers roughly 1.5 million homes and businesses across northern U.S. states like New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. In response to Canada’s energy threats, Trump told Canada to “fall in line” and warned that using power supplies as political leverage would result in consequences “far worse” than the initial tariffs.
Energy experts note that it is highly unlikely either country will completely shut down cross-border power lines, as the two nations’ electrical grids are deeply interdependent, and Canada frequently relies on importing U.S. power during peak periods.
