Middle Jurassic Krusatodon vs Late Cretaceous Asioryctes
Tiny Krusatodon,
represented by µCT scans of an adult and a juvenile (fig 1) from Middle Jurassic Scotland entered the large reptile tree in 2024 as a docodont monotreme.
Figure 1. Krusatodon skull from Paciroli et al. 2024. On the diagram colors changed to DGS standards.

Figure 1. Krusatodon skull from Paciroli et al. 2024. On the diagram colors changed to DGS standards. Note the double root on the large first premolar and the location of the canine as the first tooth in the maxilla, as in the diagram.
At the time I paid no attention
to the smaller canine vs the larger first premolar in Krusatodon (Figs 1, 2), a pattern found in Late Cretaceous Mongolia Asioryctes (Fig 2), traditionally considered a eutherian = placental.
Figure 2. µCT scan of Krusatodon recolored using standard DGS colors and slightly modified at the posterior cranium to more closely match the that of Asioryctes, shown to size and to scale. note the small canine vs first premolar and the same tooth counts and shapes in both taxa.

In the LRT
Asioryctes nests with marsupials derived from dasyurids and basal to didelphids. Krusatodon continues to nest with basal monotremes between Morganucodon + Sinodelphys and Agilidocodon + Henkelotherium.
Considering the earlier recovery of more than one placental clade in the LRT,
I was wondering if the new scores would create another origin for the Marsupialia.
That did not happen. But things have changed and will change in the LRT. We’ll see as time goes by.
