Hirschsprung Gorge (Deer Leap) in the Black Forest’s Höllental Valley is considered one of the most haunted and storied locations in the region, primarily associated with the legend of a Headless Horseman. I’m not talking about the Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow, I’m talking about the Headless Horseman of Hirschsprung! In 1975, when I was stationed with the US Army in Germany, I went to the Black Forest. I was fascinated with the story of the Flaming Man. There is a story that on one particular day in the Black Forest, people were actually witnessing a man that was completely on fire flying around the Black Forest. Finally, the Flaming Man landing on the steeple of a church and the villagers started throwing rocks at this strange humanoid. The Flaming Man flew off, never to be seen again. From this story, I can only wonder if the people of Marvel Comics captured this idea and created the Human Torch? This incident occurred in the 16th Century. The Black Forest was settled with numerous small villages, farms, and monastic settlements during the 1500s. While often perceived as a dark, untouched wilderness in folklore, the area was actively inhabited, with many towns featuring half-timbered houses (fachwerk) that date back to the medieval period, such as Schiltach. Schiltach is a historic, picturesque town in the Black Forest region of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, which is another town being overrun by spirits. The town of Schiltach is haunted by the “Dark Lady”. Mia Meier, a visitor witnessed a woman in very dark clothes gliding down a narrow street and then vanishing. Some people from the town have seen three ghostly children playing with marbles, laughing and then disappearing.

The Haunting of the Headless Horseman
Locals and paranormal enthusiasts identify the gorge as the territory of the Headless Horseman of Hirschsprung. The Headless Horseman is said to be a nobleman cursed for his cruelty during his life. He now gallops endlessly through the Höllental Valley mist, seeking the peace and forgiveness he denied to others. When the wind shifts, witnesses claim they can hear the sound of hooves striking stone, even when no rider is visible. The atmosphere in the narrow gorge is often described as “suffocating in its silence”. Leopold Schmitt from Hamburg, Germany heard the Headless Horseman say: “I seek peace!” Leopold saw the Headless Horseman gallop away and then vanish into the mist.

The Legend of the “Deer Leap”
The name “Hirschsprung” (Deer Leap) itself comes from a centuries-old legend rather than a haunting. According to folklore, a knight from nearby Falkenstein Castle was hunting a stag in the valley. Driven by mortal fear, the stag made a massive leap across the gorge to escape its pursuer. At the time of the legend, the gorge was only about roughly 30 feet wide. While the jump seems impossible today, a stag can make downward leaps of up to 40 feet. To commemorate this event, a bronze stag statue weighing 771 lbs stands on a rocky outcrop 2,624 feet above the narrowest point of the valley.

Atmosphere of the Höllental Valley
The Höllental, or “Hell Valley,” is a deep, narrow gorge with rock walls rising up to 130 meters. Its name and natural features contribute to its spooky reputation. Beyond the Headless Horseman, the broader Black Forest is often linked to tales of werewolves, witches, and “Der Grossmann” (the tall man), a horribly disfigured figure with many arms. Some locals believe the forest “remembers” its history, leading to reports of strange lights, voices in the fog, and an undeniable energy in places like Hirschsprung. Let’s take a closer look at some of the legendary paranormal stories that originate from the Black Forest. Just to let you know that when I visited the Black Forest in 1975, I did not witness anything paranormal. In fact, the Black Forest seemed very peaceful. Maybe I was just lucky.

Werewolves of the Black Forest
Local folklore describes the forest as home to lurking werewolves that emerge after dark, alongside other mythical beings like the Forest King and headless horsemen. In German-speaking Europe, “werewolf-sorcerers” were a common fixture of historical folklore and were often cited during witch trials. Theodor Weber of Bremerhaven says that when he was visiting the Black Forest, he heard the howling of werewolves. Theodor also had binoculars and while looking through the binoculars he saw a bi-pedal hairy creature running through the woods. Theodor believes he saw a werewolf.

The Witches of the Black Forest
Many “witches” were healers or wise women who used natural remedies, but they were misunderstood and targeted during intense persecution in the 16th/17th centuries. Tales often feature Waldhexen (forest witches) like Frau Trude, who could manipulate nature and served as warnings against arrogance and curiosity. They are portrayed as stewards of the land, deeply connected to the forest and its creatures. The legends of the Black Forest, which include tales of nixieselves, and witches, provided inspiration for the Brothers Grimm. Today, the “Schwarzwald Hexe” is a popular figure in local culture, often represented in Fastnacht (carnival) traditions and tourism, blending folklore with the region’s dark, atmospheric reputation.

Nixieselves of the Black Forest
A nixie is a shape-shifting water spirit originating from Germanic and Scandinavian folklore, often characterized as a malevolent or mischievous entity inhabiting rivers, lakes, and streams. They are frequently described as possessing the ability to take on human form, often appearing as beautiful women, yet are typically betrayed by a small detail, such as a wet hem on their clothing. Nixieselves are very interesting and HPI (Halo Paranormal Investigations) received a report about a water elemental that was spotted in the Sacramento River by a man from Carmichael, CA who was out fishing on his boat. He claims the water elemental known as a “Wetlash” was holding a fish. Is it possible that German immigrants who came to California, may have brought with them a water elemental?

Der Grossmann (Tall Man)
Der Grossmann (The Tall Man) is a legendary, shadowy figure from 16th-century Black Forest folklore, often described as a disfigured, unnaturally tall, multi-limbed entity that stalks and kidnaps misbehaved children who enter the woods at night. He is often associated with the modern Slender Man mythos. Described as extremely tall and thin with multiple upper limbs (often five or six), allowing him to hide behind trees. He is described as having pearl-orbed eyes or a faceless, smiling appearance. Stalks children until they confess their misdeeds to a parent or abducts them if they are found deep in the woods, leaving them in the forest, where they can never be found. Often cited as the historical basis for the internet-era Slender Man urban legend, which emerged in 2009. Later tales suggest he appeared during wars, stalking soldiers, and is worshipped by a fictional cult known as “The All-Seeing”. The legend functions as a classic “bogeyman” tale designed to keep children out of the dense, treacherous Black Forest. Lina Koch and Wilhelmina Braun of Munich claim that when they were children playing in the woods, they saw a very thin man watching them. As adults, they think of that day and believe they saw The Tall Man.
