Israeli PM, Colombian president reaffirm security partnership

During their summit in Bogota on Wednesday, Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation in a number of key fields including security. The two leaders first had a one-on-one meeting and then held expanded talks with several ministers. They discussed joint efforts in spheres such as innovation, cyber defense and agricultural technology.
In a statement, Netanyahu said that both Israel and Colombia face the threat of radical Islamic terror from ISIS and Iran. He said Tehran is extending its terror in all directions including Latin America so the world must unite to prevent the spread of Iranian aggression and terror to other continents.
Santos, the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, said Israel showed that it is a friend and ally of Colombia during Bogota’s long negotiations with the FARC rebels.
Following his meeting with the Colombian leader, Netanyahu flew to Mexico City late Wednesday night. He is scheduled to meet Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto, leaders of the local Jewish community and Israeli businessmen on Thursday. The Israeli leader winds up his overseas trip with a stop in New York where he will address the UN General Assembly next week.
