Nikki Haley: UNIFIL chief turns blind eye to Hizballah

U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley Friday accused Irish Maj. Gen. Michael Beary, the commander of United Nations forces in Lebanon, of turning a blind eye to Iran’s covert arming of Hizballah. Speaking to reporters in New York, Haley said: “General Beary says there are no Hizballah weapons [in South Lebanon], That’s an embarrassing lack of understanding on what’s going on around him. Hezbollah openly brags about their weapons. They parade them before TV cameras. The secretary general [of the UN] reports have confirmed this. For the UNIFIL commander to deny it … shows that we need to have changes in UNIFI,” Haley said. The force’s mandate is up for renewal next month.
