Reptile food recalled because of potential Salmonella contamination

Spectrum Brands Pet LLC of Earth City, MO, is recalling a single lot of its Tetra ReptoMin 3-In-1 SELECT-A-FOOD reptile food for aquatic turtles because of possible Salmonella contamination. 

The recall involves 1.56-ounce plastic containers with a green label, which is located on the bottom of the container.

The affected product was distributed nationwide between May 6 and May 16, 2025, through retailers including Petco, Walmart, Chewy, Amazon and Meijer.

The recall was initiated after internal testing by Spectrum Brands Pet LLC revealed that a component of the 3-in-1 product may contain Salmonella, despite final product testing showing no contamination. The company is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and its suppliers to investigate further.

Salmonella poses risks to both animals consuming the product and humans handling it, particularly if hands are not thoroughly washed after contact with the product or contaminated surfaces. 

While aquatic turtles are generally not affected by Salmonella, infected pets may exhibit symptoms such as lethargy, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, or vomiting. Some pets may show only reduced appetite, fever, or abdominal pain. Healthy pets can also be carriers, potentially spreading Salmonella to other animals or humans. Pet owners should contact a veterinarian if their pets show symptoms after consuming the recalled product.

Humans exposed to Salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (including bloody diarrhea), abdominal cramping, and fever. In rare cases, more severe conditions such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, or urinary tract symptoms may occur. Individuals showing these symptoms after handling the product should consult a healthcare provider.

As of the posting of this recall, no illnesses in pets or humans have been reported.

Consumers are urged to stop using the recalled product and contact the retailer where it was purchased for a full refund. Pet food bowls, cups, storage containers, and any surfaces that may have come into contact with the product should be washed and sanitized. Hands should also be thoroughly cleaned after handling the recalled food or related utensils.
