A Town Like Alice by Nevil Shute

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

After a Japanese invasion in Malay in 1939, a group of women become prisoners who are marched around in horrific conditions resulting in the deaths of some women and children. Speaking fluent Malay, Jean becomes the leader of the group as she can converse with her captors and the villagers they encounter on their marches. The women are helped by Joe Harman, an Australian prisoner who steals food and supplies for them, but is caught and tortured.

Thinking Joe has died, Jean mourns him, but carries on and eventually goes home to England after the war. A distant uncle leaves Jean a trust that she uses to build a well for the Malay women who helped her group where she learns that Joe Harman survived his torture so she sets sail for the outback and turns a ghost town into a thriving community.

Noel Strachan narrates this amazing tale of strength and resilience. Acting as solicitor for Jean Paget, whom he has deep affection for, he learns of her survival in Malaya and helps release some funds held in a trust so she can repay those who helped her survive.

While working in Malay, Jean Paget is taken prisoner along with several other woman and children during a Japanese invasion. Her fortitude and selflessness help save many, but not all, of her fellow prisoners and endear her to villagers she befriends while working in their rice patties.

Joe Harman, an Australian prisoner helps Jean and her group with supplies, but when he is caught stealing a chicken from the evil Captain Sugamo, his fate seems to be sealed as he is nailed to a true and beaten for his offense.

Quotes:

“People who spent the war in prison camps have written a lot of books about what a bad time they had,” she said quietly, staring into the embers. “They don’t know what it was like, not being in a camp.”

Would love to hear about Mr. Nevil’s later years in Australia and of course, how he was such a prolific writer.

My rating for A Town Like Alice is an 8 out of 10.
