Spain approved a royal decree to regularize the status of approximately 500,000 undocumented immigrants, aiming to bring them into the formal labor force. The amnesty allows those who arrived before December 31, 2025, to gain one-year, renewable work and residency permits, with applications accepted between April and June 2026.
Undocumented migrants and asylum-seekers already living in Spain are the target for the amnesty program. These individuals must have arrived before December 31, 2025, show proof of residency (often five months or more), and have no criminal record. Individuals who meet the requirements will receive an initial one-year residency and a work permit, which is renewable and can convert to standard, longer-term status.
This was approved by the Socialist-led coalition government via royal decree to expedite the process without a full parliamentary vote. The government aims to bring undocumented workers into the formal economy, boost social security contributions, and address labor needs.
