President Donald Trump vowed that the U.S. will “hit them very hard,” following Iranian missile strikes against two American military bases in Jordan. In immediate response, a senior Iranian official warned via Reuters that Tehran will retaliate with an intensity “dozens of times greater” to any subsequent U.S. attacks.
The sharp exchange of rhetoric marks the end of a month-long ceasefire and a sharp reignition of direct hostilities. On Sunday, U.S. Central Command carried out airstrikes destroying two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz, stating the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was poised to deploy sea mines. The IRGC responded by launching drone and missile strikes targeting U.S. facilities in Jordan and the United Arab Emirates, claiming U.S. air defenses intercepted the incoming fire. In a phone interview with Fox News, President Trump confirmed that “there will be retaliation” and extended threats toward Kharg Island, Iran’s primary oil export hub. While Iranian sources emphasized that the confrontation currently remains “limited and contained,” they warned that no regional target is beyond their reach and that shipping conditions in the Strait of Hormuz will rapidly deteriorate for non-compliant vessels.
Global oil prices jumped 3% immediately following the resumption of fire. The Iranian rial plunged to a historic low on the open market, breaching 2.1 million rials to the U.S. dollar. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced plans to roll out new Iran-related secondary sanctions every week to force Tehran back to negotiations. Despite the military threats, Trump noted that Iranian officials “want so much to meet with us,” while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian publicly stated that Tehran remains committed to finding a negotiated solution.
