Bovino joined the Border Patrol in 1996, eventually serving as Sector Chief in New Orleans and El Centro, California. He commanded highly controversial urban immigration crackdowns in major cities, including operations in Los Angeles, Operation Midway Blitz in Chicago, and enforcement actions in Charlotte and New Orleans. Bovino embraced a high-profile “turn and burn” approach, often appearing on social media in full tactical gear with assault rifles. His strategies bypassed traditional targeted investigations in favor of rapid, sweeping arrests.
Bovino was abruptly removed from his command-at-large position in January 2026. His demotion followed a major immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, Minnesota (Operation Metro Surge), during which federal officers shot and killed two U.S. citizens, Alex Pretti and Renée Good. President Trump subsequently distanced himself from Bovino, calling him a “pretty out there kind of guy,” and Bovino officially retired from federal service shortly thereafter. Following his retirement, Bovino aligned himself closely with hard-right groups and frequently promotes ‘remigration’ rhetoric.
