The Earth: Without Form, and Void - Jeremiah 4:23

The Earth: Without Form, and Void – Jeremiah 4:23

(Jeremiah 4:23 KJV)  I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.

Jeremiah receives a vision concerning the wrath of God that occurs just prior to the Millennial reign of Jesus Christ as King of the earth at the end of the 70th week of Daniel.

The description given by Jeremiah describes an extremely harsh judgment concerning the earth and all life on the planet.  The book of the Revelation gives a more comprehensive detailed analysis of this judgment but the scenario presented by Jeremiah in the verses following number 23 describes the earth almost as a complete wasteland following a ruthless and exacting punishment by the wrath of God

I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.  (Jeremiah 4:24-27 KJV)

The vision of the earth seen by Jeremiah would compare to a nuclear devastated post-apocalyptic scene that could be viewed in a movie of today.  The features of the planet were slightly moving and swaying.  There were no people, birds, or animals to be seen.  Everything was a desolate annihilated wasteland with all cities and towns laying in a heap of ruins.  Fortunately, at the end of verse 27, God states “yet will I not make a full end”.

The language used by Jeremiah in verse 23 almost parallels the language used in Genesis 1:2 – “the earth was without form and void”.  I have recently read two books concerning the so-called “gap theory”.  This doctrine essentially states that God’s creation or reassessment of the earth we presently reside in begins in Genesis 1:3 with the first two verses describing the earth and the universe as having been created at some unknown time in perhaps ages past which then endured an earlier judgment of God before it was reconstituted to our current earthly habitat.  (However, with another judgement of water with the flood of Noah’s day).

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.  (Genesis 1:1-2 KJV)

In his book, The Gap is Not a Theory, by Jack Langford, he makes a convincing argument for the “gap” and states several times that the “gap” is not a theory but a fact.  I have been aware of the gap concept for many years but never did much research on the principle.  During most of my adult life I have always considered the theory of evolution as the most unnatural faith based religion ever conceived by human beings.  I always considered geological uniformitarianism as a product of the flood of Noah without much concern for the so-called age of the earth and universe.  However, I must say the gap concept does answer many questions concerning the age of the earth, dinosaurs, sea shells and round boulders on the top of mountains, ice ages with frozen mammoths, including the fall of Satan and some of the angels.

The wrath of God at the end of the present age is definitely a judgment.  When Jeremiah uses the same words tohoo and bohoo as appears in Genesis 1:2 he appears to be giving credence to the state of the earth and universe in Genesis as a judgment of God as well.  At the end of the 70th week of Daniel, God will once again recreate or refashion the earth once again.  The wrath of God will be some serious devastation.

The Seventh Day Adventist group use this Jeremiah verse to support their doctrine there will be no humanity on the earth during the Millennium.  Of course, they have to overlook or dismiss the several scripture passages describing human events occurring on the planet during the Millennium such as:  Zechariah 14:16-17; Isaiah 2:2-4; Revelation 5:10; Amos 9:11-15; Zechariah 14:8-11; Micah 4:1-4; and Isaiah 11:6-12; as well as many others.

The 70 weeks of daniel pointed to the baptism of Jesus in 27 A.D. and ended in 34 A.D with the stoning of Stephen.

The 1000 years the earth will be empty other than satan and his demons.

      • Ephraim

So – you are originally RevSky now posting as Amminadab. I have read Chris White’s analysis of the 70 weeks of Daniel and he concludes the 70 weeks all ended around the death of Jesus with no future week left, which I tend to agree. I merely use the 70th week of Daniel as the time of the last days as a common well known nomenclature. The Revelation gives a time frame of approximately 7 years or two groups of times, time, and half a time with the added days of Daniel 12 as an extension.

I agree with Crazy Times that your 7th Day doctrine is convoluted and skewered. It does not represent the totality of a literal rendering of the scriptures, but rather a pick and choose verse system that twists the meaning of the actual scripture.

        • maxxy

…Gen1 1-2, The word “was” in that verse is actually better translated as “became”….As “became void..”….definitely implies that ‘it’ WAS something BEFORE it became formless.

          • Ephraim

            Agreed

Ammi….”The 1000 years the earth will be empty other than Satan and his demons…..true….only immortals will survive the conflagration that takes all the human life on earth. Satan and his ‘naphal’ ARE angels…..immortal.

    • Amminadab

The 70 weeks were 490 literal years that were a period of probation for national Israel:

24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem [457 B.C., Ezra 7] unto [the coming of] the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks [7 + 62 = 69 weeks, 27 A.D.]: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26 And after threescore and two [62] weeks shall Messiah [the prince] be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of [Messiah] the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined. 27 And he [Messiah the Prince] shall confirm the covenant with many for one week [7 years]: and in the midst of the [70th] week [31 A.D.] he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease [be crucified as the lamb of God], and for [because of] the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Note that unlike futurists, this interpretation does not find any reference to the Antichrist, or a 7 year peace treaty signed with the Jews, or a broken peace treaty / desecration of the Temple by the antichrist, or a 7 year tribulation. I think the evidence presented here shows that the focus of the 70 weeks of Daniel is a fixed 490 year ultimatum to the Jews and a prediction of the baptism and crucifixion of Jesus, as well as pointing to the start of judgment at the end of the 2300 years. Since the Jews did not repent of their transgressions, and rejected the Christ, their Temple and city were destroyed and the survivors scattered. So now the Gospel is preached to one and all, which began at the end of the 70th week, in 34 A.D.

Note this excerpt from the respected Presbyterian minister Matthew Henry’s Commentary, dated 1708-1710:

The book of Daniel 9, Verses 20-27

An answer was immediately sent to Daniel’s prayer, and it is a very memorable one. We cannot now expect that God should send answers to our prayers by angels, but if we pray with fervency for that which God has promised, we may by faith take the promise as an immediate answer to the prayer; for He is faithful that has promised. Daniel had a far greater and more glorious redemption discovered to him, which God would work out for his church in the latter days. Those who would be acquainted with Christ and his grace, must be much in prayer. The evening offering was a type of the great sacrifice Christ was to offer in the evening of the world: in virtue of that sacrifice Daniel’s prayer was accepted; and for the sake of that, this glorious discovery of redeeming love was made to him. We have, in verses ( 24-27 ), one of the most remarkable prophecies of Christ, of his coming and his salvation. It shows that the Jews are guilty of most obstinate unbelief, in expecting another Messiah, so long after the time expressly fixed for his coming. The seventy weeks mean a day for a year, or 490 years. About the end of this period a sacrifice would be offered, making full atonement for sin, and bringing in everlasting righteousness for the complete justification of every believer. Then the Jews, in the crucifixion of Jesus, would commit that crime by which the measure of their guilt would be filled up, and troubles would come upon their nation. All blessings bestowed on sinful man come through Christ’s atoning sacrifice, who suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God. Here is our way of access to the throne of grace, and of our entrance to heaven. This seals the sum of prophecy, and confirms the covenant with many; and while we rejoice in the blessings of salvation, we should remember what they cost the Redeemer. How can those escape who neglect so great salvation!

As you can see from the above quote, Matthew Henry, a Protestant writing in the early 18th century, knew nothing of a gap between the 69th and 70th week, and he knew nothing of a 7 year peace treaty with the antichrist in verse 27.

The futurist interpretation of this passage denies the prophecy of Jesus’ baptism in verse 24. It also denies His crucifixion in verse 27 and applies it instead to the antichrist, in an astounding twisting of scripture. I submit the futurist’s house is built on sand and will not stand scrutiny. They do not have a case, they have a relatively recent fairy tale designed to obscure the truth and spread confusion, whether they know it or not. The author of that futurist fairy tale is the Catholic Church, specifically a Spanish Jesuit priest by the name of Francisco Ribera (1537-1591). During the counterreformation he concocted the futurist interpretation to deflect reformist claims that the Papacy was the Antichrist of scripture. There is apparently no evidence that the futurist interpretation predates the Catholic counterreformation. It was intended as a smoke screen, and it still works today to a large degree.

      Rev 19:17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;
Rev 19:18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.
Rev 19:19 And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.
Rev 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone.
Rev 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

This describes all the wicked of the earth being slain at the second coming, and the destruction of the beast and false prophet. This event is also mentioned elsewhere in scripture as follows-

2 Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
(This was the beast of Rev 19:20)

2 Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
(This was the false prophet of Rev 19:20)

2 Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2 Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2 Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
(This was the rest of the wicked, who loved not the truth, the remnant of Rev 19:21)

Psa 37:20 But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall be as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away.

Psa 46:6 The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved: he uttered his voice, the earth melted.
Psa 46:7 The LORD of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah.
Psa 46:8 Come, behold the works of the LORD, what desolations he hath made in the earth.

Psa 110:5 The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.
Psa 110:6 He shall judge among the heathen, he shall fill the places with the dead bodies; he shall wound the heads over many countries.

Isa 13:6 Howl ye; for the day of the LORD is at hand; it shall come as a destruction from the Almighty.
Isa 13:7 Therefore shall all hands be faint, and every man’s heart shall melt:
Isa 13:8 And they shall be afraid: pangs and sorrows shall take hold of them; they shall be in pain as a woman that travaileth: they shall be amazed one at another; their faces shall be as flames.
Isa 13:9 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it.

Isa 24:1 Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.
Isa 24:2 And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest; as with the servant, so with his master; as with the maid, so with her mistress; as with the buyer, so with the seller; as with the lender, so with the borrower; as with the taker of usury, so with the giver of usury to him.
Isa 24:3 The land shall be utterly emptied, and utterly spoiled: for the LORD hath spoken this word.
Isa 24:4 The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away, the haughty people of the earth do languish.
Isa 24:5 The earth also is defiled under the inhabitants thereof; because they have transgressed the laws, changed the ordinance, broken the everlasting covenant.
Isa 24:6 Therefore hath the curse devoured the earth, and they that dwell therein are desolate: therefore the inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men left.

Isa 66:15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire.
Isa 66:16 For by fire and by his sword will the LORD plead with all flesh: and the slain of the LORD shall be many.

Jer 4:23 I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light.
Jer 4:24 I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly.
Jer 4:25 I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled.
Jer 4:26 I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger.
Jer 4:27 For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end.

Jer 25:33 And the slain of the LORD shall be at that day from one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth: they shall not be lamented, neither gathered, nor buried; they shall be dung upon the ground.

Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold shall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD’S wrath; but the whole land shall be devoured by the fire of his jealousy: for he shall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

Mal 4:1 For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the LORD of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.
Mal 4:2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.
Mal 4:3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Mat 13:47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:
Mat 13:48 Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
Mat 13:49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
Mat 13:50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Luke 17:29 But the same day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven, and destroyed them all.
Luke 17:30 Even thus shall it be in the day when the Son of man is revealed.

So at the second coming, all the wicked living at the time will be slain. This is why Satan is restrained or bound for the 1000 years. He will have no one to deceive! The world will not have a living person left on it!

at the beginning of the millennium .

      You wrote

“””The 1000 years is spent in heaven””” NOT on earth.”””

“So at the second coming, all the wicked living at the time will be slain. This is why Satan is restrained or bound for the 1000 years.

“”He will have no one to deceive!””

These few left go into the millennium on Earth the redeemed of Israel so as to fulfill the covenant He made with Abraham to make his descendants through the blessing an innumerable number like the sand of the sea.

Seen LIVING at the end of the 1000 year reign of Christ.. as mentioned in Rev 20:8

So after this 1000 year reign, Satan is let loose again to

” And shall go out to deceive the Nations which are in the four quarters of the Earth, Gog, and Magog, to gather THEM together to battle: the NUMBER OF WHOM is as the sand of the sea.”

      Zechariah 14 :16

16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of ALL the Nations which came against Jerusalem shall even GO UP from year to year TO WORSHIP the King, the Lord of Hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

17 And it shall be, that who so will not come up of ALL the FAMILIES OF the Earth unto Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord of Hosts, even upon them shall be no rain.

FIVE SIGNS THAT END THE 1000 YEARS

        1. The wicked are raised:

Jude 1:14-15, “And Enoch also, the seventh from Adam, prophesied of these, saying, Behold, the Lord cometh with ten thousands of his saints, To execute judgment upon all, and to convince all that are ungodly among them of all their ungodly deeds which they have ungodly committed, and of all their hard speeches which ungodly sinners have spoken against him.”
Revelation 20:5, “But the rest of the dead lived not again until the thousand years were finished..”.”

That’s ALL the wicked being raised here. From Cain to the last sinner. Literally billions upon billions the world over are alive now. Think of it! It’s not going to be a fun place by any means. PLUS, they will not be in glorified bodies as you will soon see. So if they died deaf, dumb, blind or crippled, they awaken deaf, dumb, blind or crippled as well.

        2. Satan is set free:

Revelation 20:7, “And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,”

        3. New Jerusalem comes to earth:

Revelation 21:2, “And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.”
Revelation 21:3, “And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.”

Want to know where it will settle down?

Zechariah 14:4-6, “And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south. And ye shall flee to the valley of the mountains; for the valley of the mountains shall reach unto Azal: yea, ye shall flee, like as ye fled from before the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah: and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.”

        4. All the wicked are destroyed:

Revelation 20:9, “And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.”

A review of points established about the second coming “rapture”:

(1). AFTER THE 7 PLAGUES OF REV 16 FALL ON THE WICKED, AND NOT BEFORE, JESUS COMES IN THE CLOUDS.

(2). EVERY EYE WILL SEE HIS COMING.

(3). HE COMES IN HIS FULL POWER AND GLORY, TO THEN REWARD EVERY MAN.

(4). THE WICKED WILL ALL BE SLAIN AT HIS SECOND COMING BY THE FIRE OF HIS RIGHTEOUS GLORY, TO BE RESURRECTED AFTER THE 1000 YEARS.

(5). HE COMES WITH ALL THE ANGELS OF HEAVEN.

(6). ALL THE RIGHTEOUS ARE GATHERED TOGETHER AFTER THE COMING IN THE CLOUDS OF JESUS (THE SECOND COMING), THAT EVERY EYE WILL SEE – NOT BEFORE.

(7). HE WAS TAKEN TO HEAVEN IN THE FLESH, HE WILL RETURN IN THE FLESH.

(8). THE RIGHTEOUS DEAD ARE RAISED FIRST, THEN THE RIGHTEOUS LIVING ARE TRANSFORMED, THEIR REWARD IS ETERNAL LIFE, RECEIVED AT THE SECOND COMING.

(9). JUDGMENT IS EXECUTED AT THE SECOND COMING. THERE WILL BE NO SECOND CHANCES TO BE SAVED IN THE MILLENNIUM.

(10). YOU CAN ONLY BE SAVED BY YOUR FAITH IN THE BLOOD OF JESUS TO COVER YOUR SINS, AND BY THIS FAITH YOU WILL ENDURE HIS PLAGUES UNTOUCHED.

(321 will be happy with that alert)

The rapture is a Mystery an additional understanding, disclosure about the dead in CHRIST RISING FIRST and we the LIVING will be changed to Immortality (First together) ….(at His APPEARING.)

2 Timothy 4:8 …7I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith; 8in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His APPEARING.

        Hebrews 9:28
So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and UNTO THEM that LOOK FOR HIM shall HE  APPEAR the second time without sin unto salvation…..

Obviously the World is NOT LOOKING for Him so this CANNOT BE AT THE END OF THE TRIBULATION… SECOND COMING…as EVERY EYE WILL SEE HIM… THEN.

What you posted is THE SECOND COMING (End of Tribulation) is when  Evey Eye will see Him…Everyone on Earth (the good the bad and the ugly) will see Him who survived until that time, sign in the heavens when arriving..

The APPEARING is for the BRIDE ONLY (the 5 virgins parable) when He comes as a thief and ONLY the chosen Christian believers are taken. that’s WHY there is a gnashing of Teeth when He didn’t take those left behind when He LEFT again. Beginning of Tribulation.

Be careful HOW YOU HEAR……….Always use …..as it is written

Ask seek and you will find.

        Maranatha to the Bride

1st Corinthians 15:11 Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.

12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead?

13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen:

14 And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.

15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not.

16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised:

17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins.

18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished.

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.

20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.

21 For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

22 For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.

1st Thessalonians 4:13 But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus God Will Bring Them With Him

15 For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep.

The dead are not in some hole in the ground, they are on one side of paradise or the other

      Ephraim,

Take a gander at this one hour video when you have the opportunity. It deals directly with many of the issues you outline in the article above. The quality isn’t all that great, but the best and most informative videos are usually never the slickest.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W12jUKnPbHI&feature=youtu.be

(P.S. — I almost never recommend videos. They have to be something very special indeed in order for me to suggest devoting any time to viewing them. But there are a few diamonds out there in a sea of coal.)

        “…usually never…”

        I’ll be needing coffee.
