Chicago White Sox 23-year-old has ‘fun’ no matter what role he’s in
The Chicago White Sox have been inconsistent this season, with a 4-6 record in their last 10 games. One player on the White Sox who has been a model of consistency this season has been right-hander Grant Taylor.

Taylor is a starting pitcher by trade. However, the 23-year-old, has worked out of the bullpen and opened a few games. In his six outings (three starts), Taylor has a 1.42 ERA, eight strikeouts, and two walks in 6.1 innings.

Despite not starting, Taylor has had no problem filling in wherever manager Will Venable needs him. When asked by MLB.com’s Scott Merkin whether he prefers being an opener or a high-leverage reliever, Taylor replied, “Pitching in the big leagues is fun in whatever capacity, in whatever inning.”

The White Sox starting staff has not been great this season. The starting staff has the 19th-best ERA (4.19) and is last in innings pitched (53.2 innings).
The White Sox rotation also took a major hit when Opening Day starter, right-hander Shane Smith, was optioned to Triple-A Charlotte after struggling. Through three starts, the former Rule 5 Draft pick has a 0-2 record with a 10.80 ERA and 10 earned runs in 8.1 innings.
With the rotation struggling and the White Sox not finding consistency, Taylor could be an option to turn to. Since he’s not “built up” to start, when he’s used an opener, Venable could look to extend him an inning (or pitch count) each time out.
