Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson inherited a dysfunctional team that finished 5-12 in 2024, Matt Eberlfus’ final season with the team.

The Bears did more than overachieve. Optimistic predictions had Chicago making the playoffs via a wild card spot.
Under Johnson, the Bears won the NFC North and defeated the Green Bay Packers 31-27 in the wild-card round. Chicago came up just short in overtime against the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round.
Johnson was a candidate for the Associated Press’ NFL Coach of the Year.
However, voters slammed the Bears head coach, giving him just one first-place vote, per Rob Maaddi. New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel won the award with 19 votes.
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen earned 16. Mike Macdonald of the Seattle Seahawks earned eight. Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers earned six.
Johnson finished fourth in total points, beating out Shanahan by five points.

There’s no disputing Vrabel deserved the award. He engineered an incredible turnaround in his first year in New England, leading the team back to the Super Bowl with second-year quarterback Drake Maye.
However, the discrepancy between Coen and Johnson is curious. Johnson won a playoff game. Coen did not.
It appears some voters might be salty about Johnson’s choice of words after beating the Packers in the wild-card round. After mocking Packers head coach Matt LaFleur during their postgame handshake, he yelled “(expletive) the Packers” in the locker room with his team.
Johnson was widely criticized by NFL people outside of Chicago for his actions after the game. The Bears head coach said he talked to owner George McCaskey, who said he was in agreement with Johnson’s sentiment.
That’s okay, Coen can have second place. The Bears have more work to do in Johnson’s second season.
Chicago should have the talent necessary to do what Vrabel did with the Patriots this season. If so, Johnson can all but force voters to give him the award next year in Los Angeles.
