Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens poses on the ESPYs red carpet

Jonathan Owens was big for the Chicago Bears these past two years. He missed no games over the past two seasons and made a significant impact on the Bears. During the 2024 season opener against the Tennessee Titans, Owens scored on a blocked punt return. He scored the first touchdown of the season for the Bears.

After spending his college career with the Missouri Western Griffons, Owens went undrafted during the 2018 NFL Draft. Despite that, he signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Unfortunately, he was injured before the season started and was placed on injured reserve for the entire season. He was eventually waived by the Cardinals.

Unsure future for Chicago Bears safety Jonathan Owens

Owens then spent three seasons with the Houston Texans and one season with the Green Bay Packers. He then found his way to Chicago as he signed a two-year contract with the Bears on March 13, 2024.

Owens played all 17 games in his first season with the Bears. He finished the year with 49 total tackles (30 solo), one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries. Owens also gained 13 yards from fumble recoveries, along with one interception. Despite an impressive 4-2 start, Owens and the Bears finished the 2024 season with a 5-12 record.

Statistically, it was a down year for Owens, as he recorded only 19 total tackles in 2025. It was his lowest since his first season with the Texas. Despite that, the Bears finished with an 11-6 record en route to an NFC North title. Owens was still a big part of the Bears’ defense, as they led the NFL with 33 total takeaways.

The past two seasons have been noteworthy for the safety out of St. Louis, Missouri. Unfortunately, it is still unclear where he will end up for the upcoming 2026 season.

He shared his reflection on the past year with the Bears via Instagram.

“Took a while to process man, but what a year, definitely the most fun I’ve had playing football in a long time,” Owens wrote.

“Don’t know what the future holds but our time in Chicago will forever hold a special place in our heart. The love from the city is UNMATCHED, from the food to the fans 🤞ðŸ½Still surreal to say i just finished my 8th season, hard work pays off man. Back in the lab soon 🧪⏳

Despite uncertainty about his future with the Bears, it is clear that this is a parting message for the successful 2025 season. There is still a chance that the 30-year-old safety can make his way back to Chicago next season, depending on how free agency shapes up for the team.
