Chicago Cubs take flier on former 20-game winner

The Chicago Cubs added more pitching depth Tuesday by signing right-handed pitcher Kyle Wright to a Minor League deal, per Jon Heyman. Wright (30) last pitched in the Majors in 2023 with the Atlanta Braves, the team that drafted him 5th overall in 2017 out of Vanderbilt.

He’s had an up-and-down career, battling injuries and inconsistency. Over 281.1 career MLB innings, Wright sports a 4.45 ERA, 1.4 WHIP, 4.50 FIP, 8.5 K/9, and 3.8 BB/9.

Wright is joining his third organization since 2024. In October of 2023, the Braves announced he would miss all of 2024 due to shoulder surgery. He had only pitched in 31 innings that year and posted a 6.97 ERA and 1.8 WHIP, and was already having shoulder complications before the season had started. The Braves shortly thereafter traded Wright to the Kansas City Royals. In 2025, he was rehabbing with the Royals organization, but further shoulder and oblique issues set him back.

Since his debut in 2018, he only pitched in 40+ innings once in 2022. That year, he posted a 21-5 record with a 3.19 ERA, 1.2 WHIP, 3.58 FIP, 174 strikeouts, and 53 walks in 180.1 innings. While not making the All Star team, he finished 10th in Cy Young voting. It was far and away his most successful run in the Majors so far.

Over his MLB career, he has been a groundball pitcher, with a 53% groundball rate and a 27.6% flyball rate. He last featured a mid-90s fastball and sinker with a knuckle curve, changeup, and slider. In his 2022 season, his top two used pitches were his knuckle curve and sinker.

Expectations for Kyle Wright

Being a flier MiLB signing, there are no real solid expectations. The Cubs organization has found diamonds in the rough over the years, though not every lottery ticket is a winner. He will get a chance in Spring to give the Cubs a look and hopefully be healthy enough to make an impression.

It would not be surprising if he worked in a reliever role if he indeed shows enough to warrant serious roster consideration. If anything, the groundball rate is intriguing as the Cubs staff has been a flyball-heavy unit in recent years.
