OTL: Ravens Turn to Cooper Rush, Harbs’ Wheelhouse as Underdog
Just when you thought things couldn’t get worse, they did. The Baltimore Ravens are on the verge of – if not already in the middle of – an absolute collapse, and suddenly a team previously thought of as one of the league’s best is looking like one of its worst.
Just to recap the last week or so for the Baltimore Ravens:
Fans get called spoiled
Travis Jones, Van Noy and Ricard are still out
Madubuike put on IR, Washington out 4 weeks
Jaire still “getting in football shape”
Keaton still a healthy scratch
Lamar, Roquan, Stanley, Marlon… pic.twitter.com/0DzU4SA1Bn— The Ravens Realm (@RealmRavens) September 30, 2025
It is impossible to overlook the injuries that’ve plagued Baltimore early in the 2025 season. However (and a big however), the team looked flawed before the second half of Sunday’s loss to the Chiefs. I’ll get into that shortly, but to make matters worse, Tuesday brought the announcement that QB Lamar Jackson is unlikely to play for a few weeks:
Lamar Jackson (hamstring) unlikely to play Week 5; could miss 2-3 weeks, per @brianwacker1. pic.twitter.com/KK7jc9Ee9r

“@AdamSchefter said he gets the feeling that Lamar Jackson isn’t gonna play against the Texans on Sunday..
It is a hamstring issue and Harbaugh did say that he definitely wasn’t good enough to go back into that game against the Chiefs” ~ @tyschmit #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/GTHe9b0gDy

An interesting side note of this is the idea that this injury has lingered for weeks. Many pointed out the inability to see a clear injury on the play from which Jackson left the game, while others are starting to point back to Week 1:
Chances are, the Week 1 ‘Cramps’ were a hamstring issue and that’s why Lamar’s been moving slower, not looking to run as often and holding the ball more. #RavensFlock https://t.co/nHMF3U08t4

Either way, losing Jackson changes everything. Sunday wasn’t his best game (in fact, it was one of the worst I could remember in a while), but he opens everything up for Todd Monken’s offense. So, the attention turns to beating Houston. Can they do it?
In theory, they can, and Dev Panchwagh outlines the exact approach they’ll need:
This is the week you can shorten the game. They’re playing one of the worst offenses in the league. And a run defense that’s pretty shaky.
But why trust this coaching staff to do the right thing?
Probably best to sit Lamar anyway. #Ravens #RavensFlock https://t.co/I1DPBYdQip

I agree with everything Dev is calling for but, unfortunately, don’t think they’ll be able to execute accordingly. And before you jump to the conclusion that it’s about backup QB Cooper Rush, it’s not. In fact, Rush really hasn’t been all that bad in his career as a starter:
Cooper Rush in 14 career starts as a Cowboy:
9-5 record
330/544 (60.7%)
3,463 passing yards
20 TD
10 INT

Further, it’s not about the Texans posing a major threat, either. They have a great defense, but haven’t had any offensive success against Baltimore in recent years:
Through 3 matchups under C.J. Stroud, the Texans have yet to score an offensive touchdown against the Ravens:
9/10/23: 25-9 (3 field goals)
12/25/24: 31-2 (safety)
1/20/24: 34-10 (field goal, punt return) pic.twitter.com/Asq4iqZ2nU

I have little to no faith in this Ravens defense right now.
But if there was ever a “get right game”, it would be against the Texans. They have had their number over the past 3 meetings, not allowing over 10 points in any of them.
Will it happen? No idea. This team looks…

So, back to the deficiencies we saw before all these injuries.
At least we can lean on our def… oh nevermind.
Well at least our OL can create holes for Hen… oh nevermind.
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) September 30, 2025
Whether it’s the O-Line play, the run defense, the pass rush, the secondary or coaching, Baltimore has been unimpressive outside of 3-4 total quarters of play.
Ravens OL has allowed 38 pressures in 4 weeks. Here’s their numbers and rankings in the season:
– Stanley: 9 (28th most among OTs)
– Vorhees: 8 (17th most among OGs)
– Linderbaum: 9 (2nd most among C)
– Faalele: 6 (36th most among OGs)
– Rosengarten: 6 (43rd most among OTs)— Pedro H. Rhormes (@rhormes_) September 30, 2025
I don’t think it’s set in that their entire DL is hurt.
Madubuike out for the year.
Washington out til November.
Jones is already hurt. This isn’t the team you’re used to watching the last two years. Other teams can run the ball on them at will. Even when their defense was… https://t.co/49tU4VPL2g

During the first drive against the Chiefs, the Baltimore Ravens offense looked like they might do some damage, they looked cohesive as a unit.
The same cohesion was not observed in the drives that followed, the Ravens shut down and looked disjointed, particularly on the OL. pic.twitter.com/13EXRII8gZ

I didn’t understand the Ravens strategy vs the Chiefs last week
KC D has HUGE play action splits:
#32 pass D vs play action passes
#4 pass D without play actionBAL O has HUGE play action splits:
#1 pass O with play action
#20 pass O without play actionso what does BAL do?

I hate to just dump a bunch of bad news at once, but if I didn’t today’s Out to Lunch would be triple its usual length. Either way, there’s a plethora of issues that go far beyond just injuries – Hence why Ravens fans feel so helpless.
Now, more than ever, Charm City will have to rely on HC John Harbaugh to right the ship. Kyle Goon of The Baltimore Banner outlines the decision that’s looming for Ravens brass and why a quick-draw fire may not be the right one:
Kyle makes many good points in this article. I would add this: John Harbaugh has pulled impressive performances out of depth players when injuries have piled up in the past. That 2021 team had no business being 8-9, and that 2022 had no business making the playoffs. https://t.co/f36P9qpSNO
— Baltimore Beatdown (@BmoreBeatdown) September 30, 2025
There’s plenty to unpack when it comes to Harbaugh’s ability as Baltimore’s coach, but we have seen him drive inspired performances before. Leading up to the Week 7 BYE, the Ravens need a couple of them. Otherwise, the season – and eventually Harbaugh’s position at the helm – may be lost.
But for now, it’s one week at a time, no matter how painful. Remember: Even if it’s ugly, a win is a win. It’s time to go get one:
I don’t care how ugly it is. Just win. https://t.co/xzL5yalgXo
