Notre Dame Fighting Irish rise in Power Rankings despite bye week
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish didn’t play this week, but sometimes, that’s much better than playing and losing. That’s what happened in the latest Power Rankings for the Irish, as they were able to move up a space just because of how other teams did. As the team continues its fight back into the playoff conversation, every little positive change matters a whole lot.

Last week, CBS Sports insider Brandon Marcello had Notre Dame 12th in the country. That’s exactly where the AP Poll had them. Now, thanks to some other teams moving down, the Fighting Irish are up to 11th in that list. They moved up mostly due to Missouri moving down. The Tigers had been 10th, but they dropped to 17th with a loss to Vanderbilt.
“Notre Dame sat at home during the bye week, and its path to the playoff still looks manageable,” Marcello wrote. “Undefeated Navy is on the docket Nov. 8 and a trip to Pitt after that is the most difficult challenge. First up is Boston College on the road this week.” Those aren’t automatic wins, but they’re definitely winnable games, which bodes well for the Irish getting back to the playoffs after a title game appearance last year.
The AP Poll was not as kind. Notre Dame remained 12th in that ranking, which is definitely the one that matters most right now until the CFP Committee starts releasing its rankings week in and week out. The Irish did not get the fortunate losses they needed to move up in the bye week.

Miami dropped a spot, but it wasn’t enough to move down below the Irish, who were off. Georgia Tech also slipped, but since they’re still unbeaten, they didn’t fall nearly far enough to reach the Notre Dame range. Other top 10 teams won crucial games, including Vanderbilt, which prevented the Irish from moving up.
But next week, the Irish are back in action, and there are a few games (Vanderbilt vs. Texas, Georgia vs. Florida, and Ole Miss vs. South Carolina) where, if the ranked team loses, Notre Dame could jump firmly into the CFP range.
