Author Interview: Favourite Festive Books & More

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This December I’m chatting to authors about their favourite festive reads and what they love most about the time of year. Today I talk to Mabh Savage, a Pagan author, poet, and musician, with a passion for local plants and wildlife, particularly the birds who visit regularly.

Q: What’s your favourite part of the festive season?

A: I love getting the first decorations up with the kids. We have different ideas about what makes the season magical; I love the changing weather, the longer nights, and the thrill of the oncoming solstice and the returning light behind it. The rest of the family, well, it’s all about food and pressies really. But when we get the bags of decs out of the loft, we all come together with a single goal — to make our house as glittery and grotto-like as possible. I have to say, though, Solstice dinner is a close second. The only thing that mars it is having to cook it myself, but even this is fun in its own way, if tiring.

Q: What book have you most loved as a Yuletide read?

A: My favourite seasonal read, which I will be reading again this year, is The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper. “The Dark is Reading” is a trend that started several years ago, with the idea being that you read the chapters on the dates they happen in the story, which is based all around midwinter. So, you start reading it on the 20th December, and read it in “real time” with the events in the book. It’s fun, it’s accessible for the kids (we try and read it together), and the story is in turns dark, hopeful, and full of magic.

Q: Which of your own books would you most recommend either to give someone else as a present or for a gift for oneself?

The Magic of Birds is a great gift for anyone who loves nature, folklore, mythology, or modern magic and symbolism. It’s my favourite book of my own so far, and was so much fun to write, particularly being able to draw on my own experiences of exploring local nature and the birds that live all around us. Wishing everyone a warm, safe season ahead!

The Magic of Birds is published by Moon Books.
