Bear origin and evolution in the LRT
Mclellan and Reiner 1994
reviewed bear evolution. They reported, most are extinct, 8 species remain. The also reported (plantigrade) bears evolved from (digitigrade) canids (= wolves) during the Late Oligocene.
Plantigrady from digitigrady? That sounds untenable on the face of it.
By contrast,
in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa, subset Fig 1) bears currently evolved from extinct Ursavus, then Nasua the coatimundi, then Meles, the badger, then Arctodus ,the short-faced bear, then three taxa close to Mesocyon.
So at present in the LRT bears are big badgers, not big wolves.
In both competing studies Ursavus is a basal bear.
