All Roads Did Not Lead to Rome, Study Concludes

The Appian Way, a major artery in the Roman road network.

A recent study of the Roman road system has disproved two common views about the infrastructure of ancient Rome: that all roads lead to the capital, and that Roman engineering resulted in straight roads everywhere. The study, which used the Itiner-e digital map of the Roman road network, examined almost 300,000 kilometers (186,000 miles) of the Roman road system and found that several provincial cities were more favorably situated for land travel than Rome itself. The results of the analysis have also shown that the road went straight only where terrain permitted.

Provincial Capitals Held the Real Crossroads

The findings were published on 15 September 2026 in Nature Communications. The research analyzed the roads of the Roman Empire that were in use around AD 150, using the Itiner-e atlas and a dataset published in 2025 mapping a total of 299,171.31 kilometers of routes. It was shown that provincial capitals were generally better positioned than others for the purpose of land travel.

Some cities such as Antioch, Ancyra (modern Ankara), Byzantium, and Corinth were located at important regional crossroads. Hence, it should come as no surprise that cities like Corinth connected the Peloponnese and the southern part of Greece, while Ancyra was one of the major transport centers in Anatolia. Consequently, the research shows that the Roman road network can be characterized not so much as a wheel with Rome in the heart of its activities but rather as many road networks existing in different provinces of the empire connected with each other.
