Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me. (Isa 6:8)
For many are called, but few are chosen. (Matt 22:14)
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. (Rom 8:28)
Early on during my narrow way “walk” I used to try to spend time in silence, hoping to hear the Lord speak to me.
Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. (Ps 46:10)
Twice during those times I heard my name called; it happened at two different times and in two different locations.
Both times I was laying down in the afternoon and distinctly heard my name called. Nobody was around, and I never heard anything else, just my name. That was over twenty years ago.
What does that mean? I am still waiting for an answer…
I do know what the Bible says about hearing Jesus’ voice and him calling his own sheep by name in the book of John:
John 10:1-3
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. (John 10:1)
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (John 10:2)
To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out. (John 10:3)
But there is much more to true salvation than just hearing one’s name being called.
And so, I wait.
For since the beginning of the world men have not heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither hath the eye seen, O God, beside thee, what he hath prepared for him that waiteth for him. (Isa 64:4)
The Lord has definitely been teaching me about patience. I’m fairly sure that’s why the Lord gave me that dream so many years ago!
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (Jas 1:4)
Below is a beautiful worship song of praise by Collin Raye, “Here I Am Lord,” to honor our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
The song verses are reminiscent of the experience of Samuel the prophet, as a child, whom his mother Hannah had lent to the LORD:
1 Samuel 3:1-10
And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision. (1Sam 3:1)
And it came to pass at that time, when Eli was laid down in his place, and his eyes began to wax dim, that he could not see; (1Sam 3:2)
And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep; (1Sam 3:3)
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I. (1Sam 3:4)
And he ran unto Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou calledst me. And he said, I called not; lie down again. And he went and lay down. (1Sam 3:5)
And the LORD called yet again, Samuel. And Samuel arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And he answered, I called not, my son; lie down again. (1Sam 3:6)
Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, neither was the word of the LORD yet revealed unto him. (1Sam 3:7)
And the LORD called Samuel again the third time. And he arose and went to Eli, and said, Here am I; for thou didst call me. And Eli perceived that the LORD had called the child. (1Sam 3:8)
Therefore Eli said unto Samuel, Go, lie down: and it shall be, if he call thee, that thou shalt say, Speak, LORD; for thy servant heareth. So Samuel went and lay down in his place. (1Sam 3:9)
And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. (1Sam 3:10)
My final thought…
One thing I find hopeful in the verses of 1 Sam 3:1-10 is that the connection with the Lord was eventually made, after Samuel heard the Lord call his name several times, and Samuel was attentively watching and waiting.
Perhaps that is what will happen for me (and for all those watching and waiting)!
Blessed are those servants, whom the lord when he cometh shall find watching: verily I say unto you, that he shall gird himself, and make them to sit down to meat, and will come forth and serve them. (Luke 12:37)
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; (Titus 2:13)

LYRICS
Here I Am Lord
I, the Lord of sea and sky I have heard my people cry All who dwell in dark and sin My hand will save I, who made the stars of night I will make their darkness bright Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord, if you lead me I will hold your people in my heart I, the Lord of snow and rain I have borne my people's pain I have wept for love of them They turn away I will break their hearts of stone Give them hearts for love alone I will speak my words to them Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord, if you lead me I will hold your people in my heart I, the Lord of wind and flame I will tend the poor and lame I will set a feast for them My hand will save Finest bread I will provide 'Til their hearts be satisfied I will give my life to them Whom shall I send? Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord? I have heard you calling in the night I will go, Lord, if you lead me I will hold your people in my heart Oh, I will hold your people in my heart
Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? there is no searching of his understanding. (Isa 40:28)
