Written Off, a new comedy series set to premier June 2nd, solidifies Chicago as the Midwest Mecca of funny

Actor and comedian Antoine McKay (Empire), veteran producer, first time director Margie Shabazz (Bluelight Productions) and writer Nora Nolan bring to life the trials and joys of the journalism industry in their new, original comedy series Written Off.

Chicago, IL (MMD Newswire) May 24, 2016 — With Chicago’s recent meteoric rise as an entertainment capital to rival Hollywood, it’s no surprise that Chicago-based entertainment dream team – producer and director Margie Shabazz (Bluelight Productions), actor and comedian Antoine McKay (Empire) and writer Nora Nolan – are bringing a new brand of funny to the Second City. The new, original comedy series Written Off follows the storied tale of the modern-day newspaper industry in all its splendor and hilarity. The 11-episode, 30-minute series went into production in the spring of 2016 and is set to premier at the Music Box Theatre (3733 N Southport Ave, Chicago, IL) on June 2, 2016 at 7PM CT.

Set against the backdrop of Chicago’s vibrant ethnic and creative scene, Written Off follows the story of two recently out-of-work journalists Keith Merritt and Liam Sullivan from the fictional Chicago Truth. When they find out that their beloved Fashion Section is abruptly closing, they have to find new skills to get into a new career. After a brief period of wallowing, the two decide to pursue a goal they had dreamt about since journalism school – starting their own writing business. Their entrepreneurial aspirations lead them to write speeches and articles for a host of odd and interesting characters as diverse as Chicago itself.

In addition to serving as lead actor, Antoine McKay also created and co-wrote the series. Executive Producer Margie Shabazz directed the pilot and is a co-creator and co-writer for the series. Nora Nolan, the show’s head writer, collaborated with McKay and Shabazz to bring the characters to vibrant life. “We felt like this was such an important story to tell,” said McKay. “So many newspapers are consolidating and shutting their doors and leaving an enormous amount of talent and potential out there. We wanted to capture the story of people who decided that, no matter who chose to write them off, they didn’t have to give up hope in themselves. It’s a comedic portray but I think it’s also a deeply meaningful topic.”

Written Off features both veteran Chicago actors and new faces alike and has already garnered nation-wide acclaim. It is currently under consideration for screening at both the ABFF in Miami and the New York Television Festival in New York.

Written Off is Bluelight Production’s first original series. “I feel like this project is our gift to Chicago,” said Margie Shabazz, “This city has such a rich cultural tapestry and it was really important to us that we reflected that – not only in the subject matter but also in the way we chose the cast and crew. We’ve brought together a team of really talented Chicago artists to tell a story that we feel is pretty universal across America right now.”
