There are a lot of haunted places in Baltimore, Maryland. Some of the haunted places in Baltimore are Fells Point, the Garrett Jacobs Mansion, the Lord Baltimore Hotel, Fort McHenry, the U.S.S. Constellation, the Patapsco Female Institute, and the Rosewood Center. These locations are known for reported paranormal activity, from shadowy figures and unexplained sounds to ghostly apparitions and mysterious scents. When my dad stayed at the Lord Baltimore Hotel, he felt an icy grip on his arm, when he was lying in bed. My dad is a big skeptic and said that he must have dozed off and had a nightmare. He doesn’t see it as a paranormal experience. Let’s take a look at some of the haunted locations in Baltimore.

Fells Point:
This historic shipbuilding neighborhood is said to be haunted by ghosts connected to its past as a center for bars, brothels, and boarding houses. Bertha’s Mussels was once a brothel and rooming house. It is said to be haunted by a faceless child who may have died during a yellow fever epidemic. Reports include a child with no face seen kneeling and another seen jumping rope. Then you have Duda’s Tavern. This is the oldest family-run bar in the area. This bar is the home to the spirit of “Doc,” a retired seaman who lived in the rooms upstairs until his death. Doc is known to walk up to a patron and flash a big smile, then disappear. The Horse You Came In On Saloon is a frequent haunt of the ghost of Edgar Allan Poe, who was found in a gutter in Fells Point on October 7, 1849. At the Cat’s Eye Pub, you might encounter a tall, distinguished-looking bartender named “the resident ghost”. Patrons say he still works there and it’s believed to be the spirit of a deceased employee. The Admiral Fell Inn is one of the most haunted hotels in Baltimore. A red-haired ghost named Morgan Cherry is sometimes seen in the hallways with her long flowing red hair. Another hotel is the Waterfront Hotel. This hotel has a dark history and is also the subject of ghost stories. One of the stories is about a ghost named Clint, that wears a black top hat. He is sometimes seen outside of the hotel smoking a cigar. Locals believe the hauntings may be caused by the past Yellow Fever epidemics. The area is known for being haunted due to past yellow fever epidemics and the mass graves created during those times. Then there is the maritime history of Fells Point. The neighborhood’s maritime past, with its sailors, pirates, and privateers, has contributed to its haunted reputation. Ghostly pirates have been seen in and around Fells Point.

Garrett Jacobs Mansion:
Built in the late 1800s, this mansion has seen many strange occurrences reported by guests and staff. The Garrett-Jacobs Mansion is located in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood and serves as the home of the Engineers Club of Baltimore. It was the lavish home of socialite Mary Frick Garrett Jacobs, who lived there for 64 years. Some staff believe that the ghost of Mary Jacobs still haunts this mansion. One local says that he saw Mary Jacobs dusting off a ceramic figurine and then vanished.

Lord Baltimore Hotel:
The hotel’s famous ghost is Molly, she appears as a little girl. Guests report hearing a ball bouncing and seeing a little girl in a white dress or her shoes, particularly on the 19th floor. She is sometimes blamed for calling elevators to the 19th floor and opening doors to empty rooms. Some staff believe that a couple seen dancing in a ballroom are the parents of Molly, and some guests have reported seeing them as well. They call this couple “The Dancing Couple”. People have reported seeing apparitions dressed in period clothing on the mezzanine, who disappear when they are approached. Guests have reported seeing a woman appear at the foot of their bed, handprints on a wall that won’t come off, and TVs turning on and off by themselves. The hotel’s height made the 19th-floor rooftop a popular spot for suicides during the Great Depression. More than 20 documented jumpers are believed to have contributed to the hotel’s haunted reputation. The hotel opened in 1928 and was one of the tallest buildings in the city, which has led to its status as a popular location for paranormal investigators and paranormal enthusiasts! Santo Dunn, an amateur ghost hunter makes claim he saw a ghostly German Shepard in the lobby. The dog brushed up against Santo and then ran out of the hotel and vanished. Santo says that you could see right through the dog and that is why he knew it was a ghost.

Fort McHenry:
Visitors report seeing mysterious shadows, the scent of gunpowder, and hearing distant drums, as well as a ghostly guard with a rifle. The apparitions of soldiers have been seen several times by visitors. Ghost hunters believe the sightings are residual, because the ghosts seem unaware of the visitors.

U.S.S. Constellation:
This historic ship, the last surviving ship from the Civil War, has been the site of strange encounters and unexplained sounds. Ghostly sailors have been seen. The faces of ghostly sailors have been seen on reflective surfaces.

Patapsco Female Institute:
An all-girls’ boarding school that was operational from 1837 to 1891, this Greek Revival structure is associated with stories of a little girl who burned to death and lynched slaves. Horrible screaming and moaning has been heard. The sounds of a bullwhip is sometimes heard. Crying and whimpering has been heard along with a woman’s voice saying “help me”.

Rosewood Center:
Opened in 1888 and closed in 2009, this former asylum is known for ghost sightings and spooky noises. The spooky noises are similar to the Patapsco Female Institute. Moaning and crying noises. Strange whistling sounds. The sound of humming to the song “She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain When She Comes”.

Edgar Allan Poe House:
While Poe’s ghost has been seen elsewhere, his former house is said to be haunted by someone else. The ghost has not been identified.

Now let’s take a stop at a castle in Poland!

Bobolice Castle in Poland

This ancient and beautiful castle is haunted by several entities. The first one is The Lady in White. Yes, there are many ghosts called The Lady in White. Well, this one is a famous legend in Poland. The Bobolice Castle Lady in White is sometimes described as a nobleman’s niece, who was imprisoned in the castle by her cruel uncle. The ghost of a Lady in White is said to haunt the grounds, forever bound to the place of her imprisonment. Then we have The Murdered Brothers and the Brick-Walled Maiden. This is a separate, or perhaps related, tale involving twin brothers who owned the nearby Bobolice and Mirów castles, that were connected by a secret tunnel. When one brother brought home a beautiful girl, the other fell in love with her. In a fit of jealousy, the first brother murdered his twin and had the girl walled up alive in the castle dungeons. Her ghost is said to haunt the tower. She is sometimes also heard screaming. The screaming can get so loud, it becomes ear piercing. Other ghosts that haunt the castle are The Three Screaming Maids. This legend claims that the ghosts of three young maids who were kidnapped and killed by a former castle owner can be heard crying at midnight. The story says they leaped to their deaths from the castle’s highest tower while trying to escape. The final ghost is The Pale Lady Who Brings Luck. With this ghostly legend tells of a heartbroken countess who died of despair after losing her last child. Her ghost, a pale but beautiful lady, is seen on the castle’s walls. Unusually, folklore holds that spotting her is believed to bring good luck.

Donner Train Tunnels
On another note, yesterday (10/22/2025), I was contacted by David Jones Case # 91B647H79165. David tells me that he went with his family to the very haunted Donner Train Tunnels. These tunnels are next to the Donner Memorial State Park.
David sent me a set of photos of his grandchildren posing in the tunnels and right behind them are very distinct ghostly faces. David does not mind sharing the photos and if you want to see them, you can email him at:dwjdirtroads@gmail.com
