In 1975, the US Army sent me over to Bangor, Maine for a few days. I took advantage of those few days by visiting Mount Hope Cemetery. Mind you, I wasn’t a paranormal investigator yet, but I was really curious about the paranormal, since I grew up in a haunted house in Fresno, CA. I was hoping I would witness some sort of paranormal activity. Unfortunately, I didn’t. It was still exciting to be at this historic cemetery. I was told that the ghost of gangster Al Brady haunts the cemetery, and visitors have actually seen the ghost of Al Brady wandering around the cemetery. Some other notable figures at the cemetery are Hannibal Hamlin (Vice President under Lincoln), several Maine governors, and a few Civil War generals. PFC Wayne Johnson, US Army claimed while visiting the cemetery he saw a Civil War soldier riding a ghostly horse. The soldier was riding his horse through the cemetery slowly. The soldier was looking at various graves. Then the soldier and horse vanished.

Bangor, Maine, is known for its spooky reputation, largely due to its association with author Stephen King and its historical sites. Several other locations are rumored to be haunted, including the Charles Inn and the Lucerne Inn. Let’s look at some of these scary sites, starting with Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mount Hope Cemetery:
This large, historic cemetery is a popular spot for ghost hunters and is featured in several of Stephen King’s works. Visitors have reported hearing footsteps, feeling cold spots, and experiencing other unexplained phenomena. Many visitors have reported seeing ghostly figures, unexplained shadows, and other spectral appearances. Some have heard the voices of children, adding to the eerie atmosphere. Stephen King, who lived in Bangor, frequently visited Mount Hope Cemetery for inspiration. He even used names from headstones in his stories, including the novel “Pet Sematary,” which was partly filmed at the cemetery.

Charles Inn:
Located in downtown Bangor, this hotel is known for its ghostly activity and reports of paranormal occurrences by both staff and guests. The ghostly activity seems to dominate the fourth floor. Owners and guests have experienced strange occurrences, including unexplained noises, moving objects, and full body apparitions. Specifically, a young girl and a man in a top hat known at Lassie & Top Hat are said to be seen roaming the halls, and guests have reported cold spots, knocking, and even electrical disturbances. Guests and staff have reported hearing strange voices, giggling, and knocking sounds, especially on the fourth floor. Owners have witnessed wine glasses flying across the room, suggesting the presence of unseen forces. Several reports mention sudden drops in temperature, indicating potential paranormal presence. Some guests have experienced electrical issues, like lights flickering or appliances malfunctioning, which could be linked to paranormal activity. Guests have also reported hearing someone jiggling their door handle and experiencing squeaking floors.

Lucerne Inn:
The Lucerne Inn in Bangor, Maine, is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of a bride and groom, with the story stemming from a tragic incident involving a caretaker named Nathan and his wife. According to the legend, Nathan discovered his wife with another man and, in a fit of rage, murdered both of them. The ghosts of the couple are said to linger, potentially as residual spirits tied to the emotional event. The Inn, particularly the room where the incident occurred, is now believed to be haunted by the couple’s spirits. Some believe the ghosts are a residual haunting, meaning they are echoes of the past, replaying the violent event rather than actively interacting with the living, according to Maine Ghost Hunters. The ghosts mentioned have several nicknames. They are called “The Bride and Groom”, “The Caretaker” and “The Woman in White”.

Fort Knox:
While technically in Prospect, Maine, this 19th-century fort is close enough to Bangor to be included in my list. It’s a popular destination for paranormal investigators. Leopold Hagy, the fort’s former caretaker is said to make his rounds, appearing as a shadowy figure. Then there is Mike, a construction worker who died after igniting black powder while smoking, is said to haunt the area where the accident occurred. If you visit Fort Knox and come across a young ghostly girl, her name is Elizabeth. Elizabeth is a young girl who lived on the land before the fort was built is said to play with toys left by investigators, and some have reported feeling her touch. People hear disembodied voices, heavy breathing, footsteps, and doors slamming. EMF meters have also detected unusual electromagnetic fields in areas with no electricity, and some have reported feeling cool breezes in rooms where the rest of the space is warm.

Stephen King’s House:
While not explicitly described as haunted, the iconic and gothic-looking house belonging to the famous horror author has a distinct creepy aesthetic that fits right in with a haunted visit. Its wrought iron fence adorned with bats and other spooky details, along with its association with King’s unsettling stories, makes it a popular stop for those seeking a thrill. Remember, it’s a private residence, so admire from a distance. There are rumors that Stephen King has purchased some haunted items and has them as decor around the inside of his home. The haunted items have invited various spirits to his home. People claim that they have seen floating mist in front of Stephen King’s home. The mist could possibly be ghosts according to ghost hunter Lance Darneck of Boston, Massachusetts.
