Spain: Moroccan Vandalizes and Sets Fire to Church

Once again, Spain, like other countries in Europe, has seen one of its churches vandalized and set on fire by foreigners who object to the local traditions and the Christian religion. On Sunday, a 21-year-old Moroccan allegedly broke into a church in the town of Albuñol, and proceeded to break religious icons with a hammer before setting the church on fire. Neighbors arrived, broke into the church and put out the fire. The suspect is in custody, and once again, is being described as having “mental problems”.

On Monday, the president of the Grenada (Provincial) Council, in Albuñol (Granada), condemned the fire caused by a Moroccan at the Church of El Pozuelo in Albuñol (Granada). “There are people who do not integrate into society and who do not accept this culture and religion, part of our essence,” lamented (Rodriguez), also the president of the People’s Party (PP) of Granada and first deputy mayor of Alhendín.

The president of the provincial institution conveyed his wish that the perpetrator of these acts, already in custody,” pays dearly for the damages, more emotional than economic, which he has brought upon a town and the entire province.”  “As a Christian, I regret that acts like this continue happening in these times,” he added in an audio recording sent to Europa Press.

The Moroccan arrested Sunday for setting fire to the Church of Santiago the Apostle of El Pozuelo, forced the door of the temple by breaking a stained glass window, and locked himself inside the parish church, destroying all the religious images he encountered with a hammer along the way, including the statues of the Virgin and Christ. He also caused damage to the altar, the pews, the crucifixes, and other religious items. When he heard that the neighbors were trying to enter, he set fire to the church with a lighter. 

The alleged perpetrator is a young man, aged 21, who has resided in the town, “for a short period of time,” according to the mayor of Albuñol, Maria Jose Sanchez (PSOE party). Local media say that he suffers from mental problems. The neighbors saw themselves obligated to enter the parish church by force and put out the fire with 4 hoses prior to the arrival of the firefighters.

Following the events, the deputy delegate of the government of Granada, Jose Antonio Montilla, issued a warning against, “hate speech that seeks to generate confrontations and conflicts between communities.”

Along the same lines, the city council of  Albuñol has called for peace and has rejected any intent to utilize the “regrettable” incident to “generate division or confrontation” between neighbors.  “Albuñol is a diverse, supportive, and welcoming town, where coexistence and respect are fundamental pillars that cannot be put at risk. One should not criminalize an entire group for the action of one person,” the mayor pointed out.

The city council has offered its municipal facilities to the parish community so they can continue celebrating Mass in the next few days.

For its part, VOX (political party), Granada has roundly condemned this “latest attack on the values and the traditions of Spain by foreigners who want to impose their beliefs with violence before the complicit gaze of the PP and PSOE (political parties)  bipartisanship. ” All those who come to Spain must do so in a legal manner and adapt to our culture and our customs, without imposing their extremist religion or their culture (which is) incompatible with ours. Those who enter our country illegally need to be deported, as well as those who engage in crime,” the party concluded in a statement.
