AIKMS Demands Rollback Of Smart Meters Citing Public Burden
Peddakadubur – Andhra Pradesh: AIKMS District General Secretary M Satyanna has demanded immediate cancellation of electricity smart meters, arguing that they are pushing an unbearable financial burden onto citizens. A petition was submitted to officials at the Peddakadubur Mandal Electricity AE office on Wednesday as part of a protest action.

Burden of smart meters criticized
Speaking at the event, Satyanna termed the implementation of smart meters as “atrocious,” stating that the new tariff structure is harming both domestic consumers and small traders. “This burden in the name of true-up charges is unacceptable,” he said. Satyanna alleged that the central government, under Prime Minister Modi, is pushing the smart meter policy nationwide through “a dark agreement” with private interests. “It is not a reform but a conspiracy against the people,” he said.

Impact on traders highlighted
According to AIKMS, smart meters already installed for commercial establishments are leading to additional monthly charges of up to Rs 10,000. Satyanna insisted that these meters must be removed and the system rolled back to relieve traders from the escalating costs. AIKMS leaders also raised concern over fluctuating power rates—one during the day and another at night—further adding to the burden. In emergencies, if recharge is not done in time, consumers could face electricity cuts, risking essential needs, they said.

Demand to protect common people
With the rising cost of essential commodities, AIKMS said this added electricity expense is unjust. The organization called on the government to immediately stop the smart meter drive and refrain from burdening citizens under the guise of reforms.
AIKMS Mandal Secretary Hanumanthu and local leaders including Pedda Reddy, Ramanjaneyulu, Nagaraju, and Veeresh participated in the protest and petition submission, urging authorities to take action in public interest.
