Federal prosecutors have exposed an “unlikely alliance” where Chinese underground banking networks operating in Southern California serve as the primary money launderers for major Mexican drug cartels, including the Sinaloa Cartel. Cartels generate massive bulk cash from selling fentanyl and methamphetamine in the U.S.. They turn this cash over to Chinese money brokers in California. The brokers use the U.S. dollars to purchase consumer goods or raw chemical precursors from China, which are then shipped to Mexico. The goods are sold in Mexico to return clean pesos to the cartels, while the precursors are used to manufacture more synthetic drugs to smuggle back into the U.S..
