FCC Just Unlocked Starlink’s Global Takeover (Video)

On September 17, 2026, the FCC officially granted SpaceX an international Section 214 license, a regulatory milestone that effectively positions Starlink Mobile as a global telecommunications carrier. Prior to this ruling, SpaceX was legally restricted to operating its Direct-to-Cell (DTC) 5G satellite services exclusively within United States territory. With this international authorization secured, Starlink can now route voice, data, and internet traffic globally across international borders.

Key Impacts of the FCC Ruling

The Section 214 authority allows SpaceX to act as a facility-based international carrier, bypassing traditional terrestrial roaming agreements and placing Starlink Mobile in direct long-term competition with the world’s largest telecom giants. Starlink Mobile will be capable of beaming 5G cellular connectivity directly from space to unmodified smartphones. This allows seamless cellular coverage and native calling even in the most remote dead zones planetwide. Alongside the international carrier license, the FCC cleared SpaceX to deploy specific second-generation satellites roughly 200 kilometers closer to Earth (down to the 340–360km range). This lower orbit drastically cuts down signal latency, paving the way for download speeds up to 150Mbps directly to standard mobile devices. Rather than fighting local infrastructure everywhere, SpaceX is using this regulatory greenlight to scale international carrier partnerships, such as its KDDI agreement in Japan, to deliver high-speed data density, streaming, and native voice calling straight from space.
