Some use city space and new technologies to improve on traditional farming methods to grow produce.
Naviin Thiaga said his “call to return to the land” came in 2018 when he saw the potential to modernise the industry. He transitioned to farming as a full-time career after a year working in project management.
The 31-year-old, who studied agriculture as a high school elective completing his diploma in logistics, said his father’s vegetable farm shaped his interest in the sector.
In 2022, he launched Sayur Kita Asia or “Our Vegetable Asia”, a tech-driven urban farm in Johor Bahru.
“While pursuing my diploma, I balanced my studies with hands-on experience on the farm,” he told This Week in Asia.
He said though Malaysia’s farming methods remained outdated, support from state agencies had helped turn community farming into an entrepreneurial opportunity.

We need to pay the farmers good. All around the planet. Not just in the United States or Russia. The Japanese have excellent gardening farming and I believe Vietnam does also. We need clean cinnamon and turmeric and other things that come from far away. What we grow here is contaminated swept off floors and carries diseases. On top of that the farmers from The Faraway lands that we buy this stuff from we don’t pay fairly. Some tariff money could go back to the farmers from around the world to support us and these areas. God bless the farmers of the world!
