A forgotten stretch of highway in St. Louis is now a living classroom where native plants, bees and big ideas are growing side by side.

A narrow strip of land along Interstate 44 in St. Louis is being repurposed into a productive urban garden and hands-on science lab for students.
The 3.7-acre greenway in the Shaw Neighborhood is the heart of Green House Venture, a project turning underused city land into a thriving educational garden. What was once an overlooked strip of grass alongside the road is now a hands-on lab for urban farming, sustainability and pollinator recovery.
“What we asked was what will be the big crisis for all people in 2050,” said Dr. Donald Stump, a professor at Saint Louis University and the program’s founder. “And it’s almost unanimous, it’ll be food security.”
The site is part of a growing movement to rethink how public land is used in cities. With support from the Missouri Department of Transportation, Greenhouse Venture leases the land for just $1 a year, and in turn, helps maintain it, saving the state on mowing and upkeep.
“We pay $1 a year for 3.5 acres,” said Tom Purcell, president of the Green House Venture Board. “By doing this here, we save them about $500 a year because they don’t have to cut it. We do it all—entry garden, prairie, different flowers.”
