Search for the attribution of “you can’t eat money,” and you’ll find it credited to various individuals around the globe. The concept is universal, yet often ignored by cities, states, and nations. It’s refreshing to see Des Moines residents providing reminders about the importance of using land for purposes other than increasing our tax base — and instead, using it to grow food and feed people.
It’s time to redefine what we mean by “highest and best use” of land. In the face of disruptions to food systems from climate-change-caused severe weather, cities across the U.S. need to move faster to ensure that enough land is dedicated to food.
In recent months, practitioners and advocates of local food production in Des Moines have scored some partial wins — not just for those growing food, but for the city as a whole. One example is Ryan François’ success after a neighbor reported his Woodland Realm property — where he and others grow a lot of food — as looking “like a homeless camp.” François worked with the Zoning Board of Adjustment and City Council to revamp codes in ways that work better for those using their land to grow food.
