Hilltop “smart farm” is cultivating community connections in Ohio

Dozens of business leaders, agriculture experts, government officials, and neighborhood advocates gathered on Aug. 27 to celebrate the completion of phase one of the Mid-Ohio Food Collective’s technology-rich “smart farm.”
Located at 116 North Wheatland Ave., the seven-acre farm features many innovative, sustainable, and resource-efficient growing systems with harvests going directly into the region’s charitable food systems. These include hundreds of vertical growing towers; greenhouses with advanced hydroponics; a LED-powered year-round mobile growing system housed in a repurposed shipping container; and a FarmBot that oversees the watering process of fruits and vegetables and takes samples of the soil to monitor its health.
In addition to the farm being able to grow thousands of pounds of fresh produce for the clients of the local food banks and pantries, the multi-purpose building features a large meeting space and a demonstration kitchen that will serve as an educational hub for children, teenagers, and adults.
Among the government officials who attended the ceremony was Columbus City councilwoman Melissa Green. The lifelong Hilltop resident said she was excited to welcome the Mid-Ohio Farm on the Hilltop and believes that the farm can have a positive impact on the community.
