Re:  Interview request from a man who has bicycled 15 times across America and across six continents in the past 45 years.  This is your opportunity to educate America concerning its overpopulated and unsustainable future, plus animal extinction rates, catastrophic climate destabilization, degraded quality of life. Toxic Brown Cloud. Gridlocked traffic. Interstate traffic nightmare in every major city.   America adds 4 million people, net gain, annually.  That adds up to 100 million by mid-century at an ever-accelerating use of NRR resources.  Unsustainable as to water, energy, and resources.  At some point our problems will become irreversible and unsolvable.

Dear 6o Minutes producers:

As we head into 2025, you enjoy an extraordinary stable of top researchers and writers that can educate listeners throughout America. This country houses 340 plus million people in 2025.  It grows by 4 million, net gain, annually. That’s 100,000,000 people added by mid century.  Demographers project America, at current growth rates, driven by legal, illegal and their birthrates, will exceed 440 million by 2050.

In sobering terms, we’re in a great deal of trouble on multiple fronts.  My colleague Dr. Albert Bartlett, Physics, University of Colorado, said it best:

“Unlimited population growth cannot be sustained; you cannot sustain growth in the rates of consumption of resources, i.e., water, energy, mineral/metals.  No species can overrun the carrying capacity of a finite land mass.  This Law cannot be repealed and is not negotiable.” 

As an extensive world traveler, I witnessed the consequences of human overpopulation in China, India, Bangladesh, et al. I’ve witnessed it all over America in our gargantuan cities such as LA, NYC, Atlanta, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas, Boston, Miami and so many more. The problems are SO enormous, and the numbers SO great, those cities cannot solve their problems.  As we continue to grow beyond our resources, we’re facing consequences we’re not prepared to handle.

You are encouraged to interview me, along with some of my top colleagues to speak  about human overpopulation in our Western states like California that houses 40 million people on its way to 60 million by 2050.  Arizona stands at the brink of disaster with its lack of water, yet it continues to explode its population.  Most of it driven by legal and illegal immigration and their birthrates.  (You may not want to bring that aspect into the discussion as it causes a lot of political backlash.)

We can cover such things as 1,000,000 vertebrate creatures becoming “Roadkills” 24/7 in 2025. That’s over 365 million roadkills annually as previously reported by HCN years ago.  Can you imagine how many more animals will die at the hands of our increased human population?  You can cover catastrophic climate destabilization that will accelerate with population growth.  You can cover what it will mean with millions of added cars and trucks to our state’s and nation’s highways—along with millions of buildings that will spew carbon exhaust by the billions of metric tons.  What about quality of life in this overpopulation nightmare?   I can provide you with 10 to 20 topics to cover in your series.  I can forward questions and answers to you to get at the heart of what we face as a civilization. 

The most distressing aspect of our predicament remains the fact that virtually NO ONE will address what we’re facing.  But, it’s barreling down on all of us at breakneck speed.

Additionally, I work with top population/resource/climate colleagues that could add to your interviews.

What will 100,000,000 more people added to America mean?  Answer: it means the doubling of populations of our 35 most populated cities. It means California will jump from 40 million to 60 million.  It means Florida will jump from 21 million to 40 millions as projected by demographers.  It means we face an incredibly unsustainable future.

Finally, if you will be alive or your kids are alive in 2050, they will be struggling beyond understanding to survive in what we have bequeathed them.  Let’s create a national discussion/debate in 2025 in order to change course toward a sustainable civilization.    I’m reminded of the brilliant words of Eleanor Roosevelt:  “We must prevent human tragedy rather than run around trying to save ourselves after an event has already occurred. Unfortunately, history clearly shows that we arrive at catastrophe by failing to meet the situation, by failing to act when we should have acted. The opportunity passes us by and the next disaster is always more difficult and compounded than the last one.” 

This opportunity gives you a tremendous voice in the single greatest crisis facing America and all humanity in the 21st century.  When I talk about “humanity”, I speak about the 8.1 billion human beings on this planet and headed for over 9.1 billion by 2050.  This interview or several interviews will be heard both nationally and internationally.  We really need to engage world leaders on what humanity faces.  It’s got to start somewhere and it’s got to start now.
