As of 2024, the total number of active-duty troops in Europe, excluding reserves, stands at approximately 1.6 million. The US also maintains a military presence in Europe, with 65,000 to 70,000 troops stationed across several countries, most notably at Ramstein Air Base in Germany.
NATO and Russia are not currently at war, though tensions are high due to Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, which NATO has not directly joined. NATO has significantly increased its defensive capabilities and troop deployments along its eastern flank in response to Russian aggression since 2014, focusing on deterrence and protecting member states rather than engaging in direct conflict. However, Russia’s actions, including hybrid and cyber attacks, continue to pose a significant threat to the Alliance.
