As the Rich Start to Struggle, Will They Pull Down the Economy? - Danielle DiMartino Booth (Video)

This is a 4 February 2026 published video from host Adam Taggert with guest Danielle DiMartino Booth.
We’ve all come to accept the US is now a K-shaped economy. The rich are at the top, living large off of their asset appreciation. And everyone else – the vast majority — is in the bottom leg. Feeling increasingly left behind. But the rich have been spending so amply that they’ve kept the averages for retail spending — which drives the majority of our GDP — in “healthy” territory. But what will happen if the rich start to stumble? Analyst Danielle DiMartino Booth thinks we are seeing signs they’re starting to. And she’s concerned they could pull down the economy along with them.
Because the economy is so top-heavy, a decline in affluent confidence or net worth could trigger a broader downturn. Affluent spending is highly sensitive to the stock market. If stock prices fall significantly, these individuals often “pare their spending,” which can immediately hit business earnings and local employment in wealthy areas. Analysts warn that because lower-income households are already financially stressed, they cannot “come to the rescue” if the wealthy stop spending.
Consumer spending accounts for roughly 70 percent of U.S. GDP. High-income households (earning $250k+) now drive nearly 50 percent of all consumer spending.
