The patsies
The feds say they’re considering suing Stellantis, that we used to call ‘Chrysler’, after this week’s bombshell that its massive Brampton plant will stay silent.
Three years ago Ontario and Ottawa said they’d throw in $1 billion in order to retool the place. The plan was to make peppy electric Jeeps. But that never happened. Most of the public money was halted. Now three thousand locals (assembly line workers and parts makers) are forever SOL as the company moves production south.
Everyone’s asking. Is this he beginning of the end of Canadian-made cars? Trump has called the automakers back to America, imposed tariffs and is now making it clear the Canada-US-Mexico trade deal, when renegotiated, will not allow for the duty-free flow of vehicles and parts across the border.
So over 400,000 people will be affected. Mostly in the GTA and southern Ontario.
But here’s the kicker. Stellantis is crowing loudly in the US about its plans, while it shuns Canada – where massive amounts of public money over the last few years have kept the lights on.
Taxpayers lost $3.5 billion in the bailout of Chrysler and GM during the Credit Crisis of 2008-9 (Harper’s government). Then we committed $15 billion to Chrysler in production incentives for its Windsor operation (Trudeau government). Plus another $1 billion for EV battery manufacturing. The Parliamentary Budget Officer says it will take 20 years for Ottawa to recoup public money which is going into battery production for Stellantis and VW. Then another billion for Brampton.
How does the company repay us? Like this. Here is a Stellantis infographic published for US consumption while telling Canadian workers and industry minister Melanie Joly to take a hike.

The gray area is Canada. Those little dots are Stellantis plants – neatly clustered on the US side.
In its media release, the company makes this commitment to the White House:
- Largest single investment in Company’s 100-year history, which benefits all U.S. assembly plants
- Belvidere, Illinois, plant to reopen for production of two new Jeep® vehicles
- All-new midsize truck to be assembled in Toledo, Ohio
- Warren, Michigan, plant to produce all-new range-extended EV and internal combustion engine large SUV
- Next-generation Dodge Durango to be built in Detroit
- Kokomo, Indiana, facilities to produce all-new GMET4 EVO engine
Union officials say they fear this is the end of the auto sector in Canada. Several analysts and economists share the concern. It’s a political nightmare. After all, Ottawa slapped 100% tariffs on cheap Chinese EV vehicles – now the world’s best and most advanced electrics – in order to protect the domestic industry. So Canadians can’t get good, cheap rides. And still the car guys split for Michigan, taking our cash.
A nice example: Northvolt. Quebec taxpayers have lost all of the $260 million given to the Swedish company that was going into battery production in that province. Instead, the company decided to put its Canadian operation into bankruptcy. The VW battery plant in St. Thomas, Ont. is still being built with a planned opening in two years. However, the cost to taxpayers is immense – $16.3 billion, according to the budget office in Ottawa.
But the question lingers. Will we have a car business in 2027, with Trump still in control? Of everything? And when will Canadians stop being the patsies?
Back to Stellantis.
“This investment in the U.S. – the single largest in the Company’s history – will drive our growth, strengthen our manufacturing footprint and bring more American jobs to the states we call home,” Antonio Filosa, Stellantis CEO and North America COO said in a media release on Monday. “Accelerating growth in the U.S. has been a top priority since my first day. Success in America is not just good for Stellantis in the U.S. — it makes us stronger everywhere.”
Not everywhere, pal.
When it comes to buying a Chrysler, Dodge or Jeep now, says Joly, “Canadians know what to do.”
