A community torn open in the early hours — twelve lives ended at Jumpers Informal Settlement, Cleveland. The killers must face justice. South Africa must find its conscience.

Twelve people were shot dead at Jumpers Informal Settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, in the dead of night. Twelve. Not statistics. Not numbers on a police report. Twelve human beings — sons, daughters, fathers, mothers — who closed their eyes for what they believed would be an ordinary night and never opened them again.

At this stage, the full picture of what drove this massacre remains unclear. We do not yet know whether the victims were foreign nationals, South African citizens, or a community of both. We will not speculate. What we know with absolute certainty is that they are dead, and that someone chose to kill them. That is the only fact that demands our immediate and undivided moral attention.

A vehicle arrived carrying armed men. What followed was not a confrontation — it was an execution. The settlement, home to some of Johannesburg’s most vulnerable people, became a killing ground. By the time the guns fell silent, twelve lives had been extinguished. For their families, midnight will never mean the same thing again.

The people who died are mothers and fathers. They are gone and will never come back.

Violence is wicked. There is no political justification, no criminal logic, no act of desperation that sanctifies the taking of twelve lives. Whoever pulled those triggers made a choice to destroy families, to orphan children, to rob a community of its people. That is wrong. It was wrong at the moment it happened, and it will remain wrong for as long as history records it.

Statement of CondemnationI condemn this violence and this senseless killing in the strongest possible terms. To the families of the twelve: you are not forgotten. Your grief is seen. Justice must follow.

South Africa faces a crisis of conscience. There are people in this country who feel no weight before ending a life — who draw a weapon with casual ease and leave devastation in their wake. This moral collapse is not merely a policing failure. It is a civilisational wound. The values that once held communities together — dignity, the sanctity of life, accountability to one another — are being corroded from within.

South Africa must implement the death penalty for capital offences. This is not vengeance. It is the recognition that a society which cannot protect the lives of its most vulnerable people is a society that is dying. When life is cheap, everything else follows. The fabric of the nation unravels. The children who grow up watching murder go unanswered learn, slowly and surely, that life has no meaning here.

That lesson must be unlearned. It must be replaced by a justice system with the courage to say: if you take a life without cause, you will answer for it fully and finally. Until South Africa finds that courage, the midnight guns will not stop.

Twelve people were alive at midnight on Tuesday. By morning, they were gone. South Africa must reckon with what that means — and what it is prepared to do about it.
