The Ultimatum Is Legally Dead

Let this be stated plainly: the ultimatum issued by vigilante groups has no basis in South African law. It has expired. It was never valid. No individual, group, or party has the right to expel anyone from South Africa — that authority rests solely with the Department of Home Affairs and its immigration officers. Period.

Individuals filled with xenophobia and hatred must stand down. Vigilantes, political opportunists, and agitators who have used this ultimatum to intimidate, threaten, or chase away foreign nationals have been put on notice by the South African government.

Only Police and Immigration May Demand Documentation

This must be clearly understood by everyone: no civilian, no party operative, no self-appointed enforcer has the right to stop a person and demand permits, passports, or proof of legal status. That is the exclusive function of the South African Police Service and the Department of Home Affairs. Ordinary citizens who attempt to perform this role are acting outside the law.

Any act of violence — whether targeted at a foreign national or a South African citizen suspected of “harbouring” one — will be met with the full weight of the law. The South African government has made its position clear.
